Bilbo Meets Gandalf
Bilbo Baggins, the main character in the story, is visited by a wizard named Gandalf and thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. They seek assistance in reclaiming the Lonely Mountain and its treasures from the dragon Smaug. After some convincing by Gandalf, Bilbo eventually agrees to be apart of this journey. -
Gandalf Saves the Dwarves
On their journey, the group encounters three trolls who capture the dwarves intending to cook and eat them. Gandalf cleverly stalls the trolls until sunlight comes to turn them into stone, saving the dwarves from these trolls. -
The Ring
Bilbo becomes separated from the group in the goblin tunnels and stumbles upon Gollum, a disturbing creature. They then play a life threatening riddle game, during which Bilbo discovers the One Ring, a powerful artifact that grants the user invisibility. -
Beron and Mirkwood
Seeking shelter, the group meets Beorn, a unique man who can turn into a bear. He helps them with shelter, food and ponies for their journey. Then, in the spooky and dark Mirkwood Forest, they battle giant spiders. Then Bilbo saves the dwarves with his quick thinking and courage from the huge spiders. -
The Ring Part Two
The group is captured and imprisoned by Wood-elves. Using the ring, Bilbo figures out a way to escape. He turns invincible and hides himself and the dwarves in barrels which are then sent down the river. -
The Secret Entrance
The group arrives at the Lake-town, an area near the Lonely Mountain, the group is welcomed by the locals and given support and supplies for their journey to reclaim Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, from the dragon Smaug. Upon arrival at the mountain, Bilbo discovers the hidden door into Erebor, they enter the mountain and are hopeful that they are going to reclaim their homeland. -
The Battle
The various groups fight in a battle for the treasure in Erebor. Orcs, men, elves and dwarves clash in a chaotic battle. Alliances are formed and broken within the battle, ultimately leading to the defeat of the goblins. -
Death of Thorin
Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the dwarves, gets killed in the battle, he lays down with Bilbo one final time acknowledging the dwarves contributions and expressing his gratitude towards Bilbo. Thorin's passing marks a significant part in the story and in Bilbo's journey. -
The Return Journey
After the battle and the passing of Thorin, Bilbo along with Gandalf reflect on the journey back to Shire. The return journey is filled with thoughts, relief, and reflection among the group. -
The Aftermath
Bilbo returns to his home in the Shire only to find out that he is labeled dead. His belongings are being auctioned off, this event causes a commotion among the hobbits. He handles the situation with humor. Everyone is surprised that he is well and alive and the rest of the hobbits are eager to hear about the journey of his adventures. He is now filled with wisdom. The journey forever changed his life.
