    The first video games, like tic-tac-toe, or Nimrod, were the first video games. They were developed by scientists. They were doing this for research purposes and to experiment with new technology. Tic-tac-toe was played on a system called Bertie the Brain.

    Spacewar! was the first recognized video game with real objectives. It was developed by students at at MIT and simulated a space battle between two people. It was very simplistic and was developed for the PD-1.
  • First purchasable console

    A company called Sanders Associates created the idea of having an at-home entertainment device that would be able to hook up to a television. A prototype console, called the Brown Box, was made, but the Sanders Associates sold the rights to Magnavox to commercialize. The Sanders Associates and Magnavox continued developing a console, making the Magnavox Odyssey and releasing it in 1972.

    In the late 70s, pinball machines were quite popular, but a company in Japan made a new type of game: the arcade machine. The arcade industry in Japan would mainly focus on racing games and shooting games. Eventually, arcades would make their way to the United States.

    Currently, there are two new consoles coming out this year: the PS5 and the Xbox One X. These consoles have revolutionary hardware.
