    Developers led by Ralph Baer invented a prototype multiplayer video game system that could be played on the tv. It was known as "The Brown Box."

    In 1977 Atari released the Atari 2600. This home console featured joysticks, interchangeable game cartridges, and multi-colored games. This started a new era of video games, known as arcade games.

    Space Invaders was released in 1978. The man behind the first arcade games design was Tomohiro Nishikado. It was manufactured and distributed by Taito in Japan. It was licensed in the United States by the Midway division of Bally. This game was also the first fixed shooter.

    Activision was the first third-party game developer. Which means they developed software without making consoles or arcade cabinets. Activision is still around today, helping develop famous games such as Call of Duty Black Ops and many more.

It had improved 8-bit graphics, colors, sound, and gameplay when compared to previous consoles. This console would support many popular characters today including Mario, Luigi, and Zelda.

    In 1989 Nintendo released the Game Boy. A hand held gaming device in which the game Tetris could be played. The device was revolutionary and helped later create the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo 3DS.

    In 1995 Sega released it's first 32-bit console known as Saturn, in efforts to beat Sony's new Playstation sale-wise. Alongside Sega, Nintendo released the Nintendo 64 (N-64) console with 64-bit graphics and many games. Even though Sega and Nintendo had their fair share of "high-end" game releases such as "Virtua Fighter" and "Super Mario 64," they couldn't compete with Sony's Playstation.

    In 2000 Sony released the Playstation 2, becoming the best selling console to ever exist to this day. With over 150 Million Sales this console beat out any competitors it had at the time, and still is. This console is the most popular console anywhere in the world to ever exist.

    In 2013 Sony and Microsoft released their two newest consoles, the Play Station 4 (PS4) and the Xbox One. These consoles contain insanely detailed graphics and colors. They offer a variety of games in unimaginable amounts. Currently they are two of the most common household consoles all across the world.
