Packet-switching networks are the foundation of the internet. Early packet-switching networks were set up in Europe, and were later used in America in 1968 and went into opperation the year after that. -
The First Large-Scale Internet
The first large-scale internet was used as a set of interconnected US military computers. -
Email
Services including Email were used through the ARPANET system and was enjoyed by all who participated. -
Usenet
Usenet was developed between the 70's and 80's. All the main Universities in the US used this for experimental data and educational resources. -
First International Connection
The first International connection was made to the University College of London -
Personal Computers
Personal computers brought a large croud, using Email and Usenet, Bitnet, and Fidonet for discussions. -
IRC
Internet Relay Chat came about in 1988 and were used to form Chat Rooms -
WWW.
The World Wide Web was developed by Tim Berners-Lee, with assistance from Robert Caillau. He wanted to make the design simple so it could work on both dumb terminals and high-end graphical X-Window platforms. He was able to access some of his own pages through his "Browser." -
Mosaic
Researchers quickly began designing webpages and browsers of their own. The first "proper" browser was Mosiac, which quickly took over the internet. -
