    NAACP
    The NAACP, or National Association for the Advancement of Corored People, was a major contributor to the civil rights movement. They suported Marting Luther King jr.s beliefs and through court cases going as far as the Supreme Court to sit ins and non-violent protests they worked for first class citizenship.     Universal Negro Improvement Association
    Headed by Marcus Garvey the Universal Negro Improvement Association promoted pride in being an african american as well as fighting for the rights of Africans. Also he fought against lynchings and denial of voting rights for colored people. Although his intentions were good many of his fellow leaders in the association were corupt and Garvey was arrested bringing an end to the orginazation.

    Goodman's preformance at Carnegie Hall
    Benny Goodman, a famous jazz artist, was well known throughout the country. HIs jazz band consisted of both white and black members but when they were about to go play at a sold out concert in Carnegie Hall they refused to let the black members of the band play, Outraged Goodman refused to play unless all his band members were there to play with him.     Beating of Emmet Till
    Emmet Till, 15, born in Chicago was not accustomed to the racial bias in the south. While visiting family down south he spoke to a white woman and was then accused of flirting with her. He was beaten to death by two white men who were acquitted of the crime. His mother demanded an open casket funeral where all could see the result of racial hatred.

    Rosa Parks Bus Boycott
    While riding the public transit Rosa Parks was forced to sit in the colored section of the bus. When the bus filled there were not enough seats for some of the white passengers and Parks was asked to move.     The "Seperate but Equal" laws were strong in Greensboro North Carolina. Many restaurants bars and other public establishments forced Africans to used the colored sections of the building.     James Meredith had applied twice to the University of Mississippi and been denied both times. He complained to the Fifth Judicial Curcuit Court and they decided that Mississippi was still acting under the segregation laws of public schools that had been dropped.     Rodney King Beating
    On april 29 1992 Rodney King was assaulted by 15 police officers. Their report claimed that King reached into his pocket as if to get a weapon, tripped an officer and tried to stand up while being cuffed. The officers procceeded to beat him with a night stick, kick him and tasers the helpless man. The injustice shown here sparked a slew of roits by civil rights activists.
