The first special education school in the United States is established.
The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest permanent school for the deaf in the United States. It was founded April 15, 1817 in Hartford, Connecticut by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc and became a state-supported school in 1817. The school became the first recipient of state aid to education in America when the Connecticut General Assembly awarded its first annual grant to the school in 1819.

The American Association On Intellectual and Developmental Disabilties is formed.

This association has been providing worldwide leadership in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities. -
CEC is founded
A group of students attending the Teachers College at Columbia University organized a meeting to discuss ways to promote fellowship among educators as well as a means of exchanging ideas among workers in special education. The students invited Elizabeth Farrell, their professor, to attend this meeting at which the International Council for the Education of Exceptional Children was founded, and later became known as the CEC.

Autism is introduced by Dr. Leo Kanner at John Hopkins.
Dr. Kanner's paper on AutismDr. Kanner’s paper on Autism</a>Leo Kanner, M.D. (1894-1981) He was born in Austria and educated in Germany, he immigrated to the United States in 1924. In 1930, shortly after coming to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Professors Adolf Meyer, Director of Psychiatry, and Edwards A. Park, Director of Pediatrics selected Dr. Kanner to develop our nation’s first child psychiatry service in a pediatric hospital. Dr. Kanner was the first physician in the United States to be identified as a child psychiatrist. -

1972 Mills v Board of Education
Mills sues on behalf of 18,000 disabled children stating that disabled children were being denied public education without due process. The school district admitted that an estimated 12,340 children with disabilities would not be served during the 1971–1972 school year because of budget constraints. The U.S. District Court ruled, in a pretrial hearing, that school districts were constitutionally prohibited from deciding that they had inadequate resources to serve children with disabilities. -

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Definition of disability extends coverage of section 504 to employment, public and private educational institutions, transportation providers and telecommunications, regardless of presence of any federal funding. This law protects all persons with a disability from discrimination in educational setting based solely on disability. It eliminates barriers that would prevent a student from full participation in programs/services offered to the general school population. -
No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
NCLB focuses on:Targets require improving the academic achievement of all public school students, including the disadvantaged, and including students with disabilities. Specific disability categories are defined in the law; covers children with educational disabilities that required special services from specially trained teachers. NCLB Covers students with educational disabilities that require special education services from ages 3-21 or until graduation. -
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
