Hot of Not?
Hot or Not came out in 2000. On this site Users would upload photos of themselves for other people to rate them based off of attractiveness. this site was known to cause insecurities and low self of steams issues. -
Friendster
Friendster was created in 2002 and was supposed to serve as a dating app. Friends would connect through mutual friends and so on. This dating site spiked surprisingly at its peek only a year later. while this happened users quickly went elsewhere to find new faces to match with on other dating sites. -
Myspace
Myspace was created in 2003 and was the new Friendster. What myspace had that Friendster didn't was the feature of public profiles which was the new must have to upload photos, videos, and music for everyone to see and access. -
Facebook
The Facebook was launched in 2004. shortly after the name was changed to just Facebook which was bought for 120 mil in 2005. Facebook took off that same year. which led to many more social media sites being created in 2005 as well , one for instance "WordPress". -
LinkedIn
LinkedIn was launched in 2005. This site was created to target the business community/professionals in the workforce. This site is still very popular for this target market, for professional profiles and resumes to accessed on. -
YouTube
YouTube launched in 2005. a site to upload personal videos, create a profile and have a personal channel. This site took some time to gain attraction. -
Twitter
Twitter launched in 2006. This was a site to create a profile and share the short rent free thoughts that appear in your head throughout the day. you could share whatever you wanted as long as you did not exceed the all of 140 character limit they gave the users. in 2017 twitter doubled that character limit! -
Tumblr
Tumblr launched in 2007 by David Karp a 17 year old from his bedroom. some would describe this social media as twitter and YouTube combined. -
Weibo
Weibo was launched in 2009. this was simply another form of social media that acted like a twitter or Facebook for micro blogging. -
Foursquare
Foursquare was an app created to make friends within your neighborhood. this social media launched in 2009 -
Emojis are introduced
The emoji was adopted by Unicode in 2010. this became so viral the oxford dictionary added it in 2015. -
Instagram
Instagram was launched in 2010. This was a platform to upload photos (with the option of many filters) with a caption. -
Pinterest
Pinterest was launched in 2010 but did not pick up on popularity till 2011.a social bookmarking site if you will for anything you want, importation, recipes, art, etc. -
Snapchat
Snapchat was launched in 2011. this app soon became viral with the features of sending pictures or messages to your friends and then it vanished after 24 hours forever. later on snapchat gave user an option to save photos into a memory archive. -
Google plus
Google+ launched in 2011 and started as an invitation only site. separating itself from features like Facebook google plus had "circles" as groups of friends. -

Year of selfies
2014 was Named the year of Selfies because they were trending virally. you could find selfies on every social media feed. -
Meerkat
Meerkat was the first social media to have live streaming. this app was launched in 2015. It wasn't long before twitter got ahold of this feature and live streaming moved on to twitter. -
Facebook Live
Facebook Live was launched in 2016. following the trend of live streaming quickly this feature added on to the daily feed on Facebook by the Billions of users. -
Instagram Stories
Instagram added a new feature to the app in 2016. They gave user the ability to share stories. this feature is similar to snapchats purpose. -
Troll Factories
in 2016 Troll Factories on social media was used to spread false information on important topics happening in the world such as the U.S. Presidential election. research shows that over 126 millions users were exposed to content spread from Russian agents. -
Instagram IGTV app
Instagram launched an IGTV app in 2018. this app feature now acts like a YouTube with similar features and abilities. -
Tiktok
TikTok launched in 2016 but didn't pick up until the pandemic Covid - 19 and is now one of the most Viral social media apps around the world. making short videos mostly of dancing or tiktok dances and other content as well. -
Clubhouse
Clubhouse recently launched in 2020 as an audio-chat social network.
