An organization called ARPAN (advanced research products agency network) created a new way for universities to communicate using a prototype for the internet. Unfortunately, the whole project did not go through. All that was transmitted was "LO" in an attempt to broadcast the word "LOGIN" -
First Social Media Site Created
A website called Six Degrees, a social site where users could post messages or other items for other users in their "degrees" to see. Lasted from 1997 to 2001 when other major sites became popular. -
Launch of Google
Created in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin this was and still is the most used search engine on the internet. Very useful for seeking information, looking someone up, trying to find recipes, relevant videos, resources for school projects. With a few taps on a keyboard and the click of a mouse, google can more than likely point you in the direction of the information that you're looking for -
Blog Platform Emerges
Created by Brad Fitzpatrick in 1999, this website was meant to be a way for him to communicate with his friends and keeping them up to date on his personal life. It was more of a diary type of platform. This interested a lot of users and made the site quickly become popular because of how different it was from other platforms and the way that the information could be shared. -
Business Platform Created
Unlike other social media networks, this site was created for businesses. Users can post their resume, advertisements, job searches, and other promotions that would help employees and other professionals with sharing information

In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg and his colleagues took a dorm project and made it into one of the most widespread and heavily used social media platforms. Created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, they wanted to make a difference in how information was posted on their app. They made this social media platform totally photo sharing based to where users can follow each other, post pictures, and like & comment back and forth to followers in their feed. Companies also use this site to post catchy ads and colorful pictures to catch consumers eyes. -

Created by Evan Spiegel, Reggie Brown, and Bobby Murphy This app is used today by predominantly a young audience. It makes plain texting more interesting by taking pictures, adding text, and also stickers & other decorations for friends to send back and forth to each other as a form of communication.

Vine
Created by Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov, and Colin Kroll in 2012, this social media platform was meant for video sharing. Most of the content was humorous and geared for a younger audience. There was increasing popularity in this app for a couple of years but then the app lost the fame and is no longer in use. -
"Fake News"
Now that there are so many different ways to post and share information, there are a lot of sources that are not reliable. You cant trust everything you see on the internet obviously, but starting in 2018 there was a lot of attention drawn to the fact that people were being misinformed about many topics that were relevant to that time period. It still happens today, all the time. It is important to be cautious and check the sites that you use.

The Future
In today's times, there are so many ways to share information. Starting with a telegraph to what we have now, the advancements in technology that have been made are astounding. Without these websites, apps, games, and everything in between, it would be hard to stay connected to the world around us and up to date on the latest events. Children today are exposed to social media every day. Some of these sites can be educational for teachers and students alike. Overall, social media can be useful.
