    At first Hershey was just a small company owned by Milton Hershey, a caramel maker. When William Murrie was hired, he helped Hershey so much, that it became it's own company. Hershey was manufacturing 114 chocolate novelties by 1895. In 1898 Hershey created a new logo, the baby in the bean. This logo was replaced by today's Hershey logo in 1968, when Hershey became the Hershey Foods Corporation. Milton Hershey became the first American to manufacture milk chocolate in 1899.

    In 1895 Jell-o was bought From Peter Cooper by Pearl B. Wait. He and his wife made it into a prepackaged dessert. Wait was unsuccessfull selling the desserts, so he sold Jell-o to Frank Woodward. Woodward was successfull in selling Jell-o.

    Life Savers
    Clarence Crane, a chocolate manufacturer, created these to withstand the heat of the summer. Since the candies looked like miniature life preservers, Clarence dubbed them "Life Savers".
  • Gummi Bears

    Gummi Bears
    During the 1920's, Hans Riegel created Haribo Gummi bears. These Gummi bears were the first of their kind. Haribo started in Germany, and came to the U.S. in 1982.
  • Milk Duds

    Milk Duds
    The Hue from Hue company in Chicago was the first to manufacture milk duds in 1926. Holloway took over the Hue from Hue company in 1928. Holloway sold Milk Duds in 1960, to Beatrice Foods. Leaf bought Milk Duds in 1986. Leaf sold the Milk Duds business in 1996 to the Hershey Food Corporation.

    M&Ms
    In 1932 Forrest Mars started manufacturing the Mars bar for troops. Shortly after, he saw soldiers eating small chocolate beads coated in sugar. This inspired mars to create his own version of the candy, called M&Ms. Bruce Murrie, the son of William Murrie, Hershey executive, joined Mars. M&Ms were included in a soldier's rations in WW||.The M&Ms were originally sold in cardboard tubes, but in 1948 these changed to bags. The cartoon characters were introduced in 1954 along with peanut M&Ms.

    In the late 1950's, Breaker Confections, a small family owned company, was started in Chicago. Sunmark Companies bought Breaker confections in 1965. Breaker Confections became Willy Wonka Brands in 1980, and then changed to Willy Wonka Candy Factory in 1993. The name was inspired by the movie and book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".
