The History of Physical Education

  • The First PE Teacher

    The First PE teacher was Johan Friedrich Simon in Dessau, Germany. The curriculum consisted of mostly gymnastics but also included fencing and horseback riding.
  • First Daily lesson plan for PE

    Johann Bernhard Basedow developed the first daily physical training in a school. One main outcome from this was that he created the outline to ensure correct supervision and that exercises were taught properly.
  • Denmarks Bill of 1814

    on January 1, 1814 Denmark was the first European nation to make Physical Education mandatory in its school. Like in the first PE class Gymnastics was the base of the teaching curriculum.
  • Hartford Seminary

    Catherine Beecher opened the Hartford Seminary which was a private school for girls which was one of the first schools to focus very strictly on a healthy and physical lifestyle.
  • First PE teacher in America

    Charles Beck becomes the first PE teacher in America and established the first outdoor gymnasium
  • First YMCA in the United States

    The first YMCA opened in the united states in 1851 at the Old South Church in Boston, Ma. The main purpose of the YMCA is to motivate and educate the youth about the world and fitness.
  • Boston becomes the first city to require PE

    In 1853 Boston became the first city to require PE as a daily part of their curriculum. not long after this many other cities throughout the United States also began implementing this.
  • California becomes first state to Require PE

    In 1866 California became the first state to require PE. The main goal of adding PE to the curriculum was to keep kids active and to educate them on physical education. Because of this many states also began to follow their steps.
  • Association for the Advancement of Physical Education

    This first group gathered first in Brooklyn, New York which was a group of 60 people to discuss methods of teaching, and a system of measurements. This meeting was mainly focused on Gymnastics because this was the basis of PE at the time.
  • The 1889 Boston Conference on Physical Training

    The 1889 Boston Conference of 1889 was the first time the new profession of Physical Education received national attention. In the end the conference created and clarified many different ideologies and theories to further the advancement of PE and physical training in the US.
  • Seven Cardinal Principles of Secondary Education

    In 1918 the Commission on the Reorganization of Secondary Education established the seven cardinal principles of secondary education. This brought a new focus that would take into account individual differences, goals, attitudes, and abilities.
  • School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation

    In 1946 the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) was founded in the U.S. The mission of the School of HPER is to facilitate research and scholarly inquiry, the preparation of professionals, and the provision of services in health, kinesiology, and recreation.
  • creation of NAIA

    The NAIA is an association that organizes college and university athletic programs. When developed in 1952 many sports for the first time had national sponsorship. These sports included golf, tennis and outdoor track.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    This was a milestone for physical education because up until this point black children did not receive the kind of training and leisure time as that of white kids. With this ruling black children would now receive equal opportunity in not only your math's, reading, etc. but also in the area of Physical education.
  • Presidents council on youth fitness was created

    President Eisenhower established the Presidents Council on youth fitness which allowed volunteer citizens to communicate with the president through the secretary of health and human services about physical fitness, health and sports in America. The councils main goal is to make physical activity, sports and health fun and enjoyable for all age groups.
  • Public law 90-170

    This law ensured that kids with disabilities also received education in the area of health and PE, specifically within the motor skills and coordination areas of PE. This law also guaranteed that funds would be available for research and training within adapted physical education.
  • creation of Title IX

    This federal law prohibits the discrimination on the basis of sex in any program activity that is federally funded. This law enabled both male and females to get the same educational benefits and greatly changed the world of P.E.. Until this point many females did not get the same treatment or education in P.E. Funding in all areas was now equal.
  • May Month

    In 1983 May was named the national month for national physical fitness and sports. During this month schools around the nation emphasize the importance of physical activity and physical education.
  • Spark Program was established

    in 1989 the SPARK program was established which is a research based and public health organization that promotes lifelong wellness. It focuses on educating children from an early age about physical education to allow them to carry this with them into adulthood.
  • Public Law 108-265 was passed

    in 2004 public law 108-265 was passed which required school districts who are funded federally under the meals program to begin focusing more on nutrition and physical activity
  • Healthy people 2020

    This is a program that sets standards and goals for a 10 year period and is revised every 10 years. This shows us where we are as a nation and health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats.
