Early Mac OS X
10.1 Puma was released in September 2001 and this was a major stride forward for Apple's operating system. However, this OS was still optional for users as it was apparent that this advancment was tailored towards the newer Macs that were being released. -
Mac OS X 10.2, Jaguar
Jaguar was another step forward from the already successful Puma OS. It continued the trend of adding even more innovative apps that are now key staples in our current OS X. This included the introduction of the Mail app as well as easier networking programs. -
Mac OS X 10.3, Panther
Panther was released shortly after Jaguar and included 150 new features. Some of these were the introduction of Zip (file compression), iChat and the decision to change Safari to the default browser. -
Mac OS X 10.4, Tiger
Tiger added some more massive features for the OS including Spotlight, Dashboard and major improvements to the Quicktime player. As well as in-built dictionary app. -
Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard
This OS X took longer to develop than its predecessors as the development of the iPhone was the main priority and took up a vast majority of the engineering time. However, Leopard added photo booth as well as some other minor adjustments to pre-exsisting apps. -
Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard
Snow Leopard didn't make any notable changes in comparison to Leopard. The biggest change was basically the improvements to the overall speed of Finder. However, Apple made up for this by drastically lowering the price of this new OS X. -
2011: Mac OS X 10.7, Lion
Lion this time had a large number of new features. The most important ones being Airdrop, Launcher and Lion was also bundled with the Mac App Store. -
OS X Mountain Lion
Mountain Lion was known for being a maintenance upgrade for the previous OS X. However, it also added apps that came over from iOS such as Game Center, Notification Centre and the Messages app that replaced iChat. -
OS X Mavericks
Mavericks included the new major iOS feature that was iCloud. This allowed Mac to connect with its iOS counterparts such as the iPhone, iPad or iPod. Also this OS X added the iWork apps for free. -
OS X Yosemite
Yosemite was mainly remembered for the number of bugs this OS X brought with it. Most of the new features added were never reliable and the changes to the pre-existing software felt unnecessary. -
OS X El Capitan
El Capitan was mainly purposed as a maintenance fix for the previously mentioned bugs that came with Yosemite. There were minor changes to Safari and Notes as well.
