    The ability read was very important, but the ability to write was a big deal also. It was common for people to keep diaries. Page layout and lettering were practiced not just among artists but for everyone.
  • Incunabula

    Before the year of 1501, a book called an Incunabula that wasn't handwritten, but printed. These are very rare pieces of art history. "Of the Rise and Progress of Typographic Art", was the very first Incunabula.
  • Photography

    Photography
    The very first image was produced by a French inventor. It required eight hours of bright light to develop the image. Other inventors found easier and quicker ways to speed up the developing process of a photograph.
  • Printing

    Printing
    Using movable typewriters was costly for people and so anything that was too big had to be engraved on stone plates. There was a set grid of typing allowed that determined whether or not the typography would be able to fit. It was complicated, but as new inventions came along, grids didn't matter.

    Alois Senefelder made the invention printing with some stone plates, which is where lithography came into place. Lithography dates all the way back to the late 18th century. This art technique spread very quickly in the art world.

    With the earlier invention of the art technique, lithography, colored poster could be printed. Posters were very cheap and affordable. This added to the rise of the Art Nouveau period.

    Desktop publishing and graphic art software came together with "cyberpunk", known as a science fiction art genre and also deconstructionist design. The advanced use of technology in that period gave graphic designers the ability to use graphic techniques such as layering, etc.

    Dating back to the Prehistoric period, cave and rock paintings were created 40,000 years ago. Animals such as Bison, horses, and deer were common to paint. It began in the Aurignacian period.

    Chinese Logograms
    A logogram is a Chinese character. It is possible that a complete writing system was already created about 3,500 years ago. If that's true, then it is the world's oldest writing system that still appears today to be in use.
