    Francisco Pizarro was told it was a gold-rich area by natives of present day Peru. Also known as Piru. Piru translates to a great land to the south rich with gold.

    These Afro- Americans made up 4-6% of Ecuador's population. The start of slavery was not until the first slaves were to abandon ship of the coast of Ecuador on their way to Peru.

    At 8:30 a.m., a violent tremor struck historical churches, buildings, and homes. Because most people left for work that morning, there were less fatalities than buildings lost.

    Ecuador remains one of the top producers in bananas. They produce roughly four million tons of bananas annually! Most farms are owned by large corporations such as Dole and Del Monte.

    Ecuadorian- Peruvian War of 1941

    Both sides agree to cease-fire on July 31, 1941. After signing the Rio de Janeiro Protocol on January 29, 1942, the war was officially over.
