The History of Computer Technology

  • Period: to

    1910-1920

1910-1920 was known as the pre-industrial era of computers, there was not much going on at the time, but the first logic and effort was put into calculators and other calculating machines. As the popularity of calculators grew, computer companies such as the IBM were formed and calculators started to merge from being strictly scientist used to being used by businesses

During 1920-1930, Scientist Konrad Zuse worked in Berlin doing research on using electric relays as ON/OFF controls. In this time period the properties of silicon were discovered, the first logic circuits were built into computers, and the early stages of the television were being invented.

In the 1930’s, scientist John V. Atanasoff created a simple vacuum tube device that took computer concepts further just relay switch devices. Logic systems then were in all computers and Bill Hewlett and David Packard made their first product, the HP 200A Audio Oscillator, which became popular test equipment for engineers.

    1940-1949

In the 1940’s, computers were getting more advanced. The Manchester Mark I computer, made by Frederick Williams and Tom Kilburn, functioned as a complete system using the Williams tube for memory. This machine became the prototype for Ferranti Corp.´s first computer

    1950-1960

By the 1950’s, Herbert Simon and Allen Newell had invented Logic Theorist software that gave rules of reasoning and proved symbolic logic theorems. The release of Logic Theorist marked a milestone in the field of artificial intelligence.

In 1964, IBM announced the System/360, a family of six mutually compatible computers and 40 peripherals that could work together, and CDC´s 6600 supercomputer, designed by Seymour Cray, performed up to 3 million instructions per second — a processing speed three times faster than that of its closest competitor, the IBM Stretch. Technological advances were growing, and the popularity of computers were dramatically increasing.

During 1979, the era of gaming systems was beginning. Atari introduced the Model 400 and 800 Computer, and shortly after delivery of the Atari VCS game console, Atari designed two microcomputers with game capabilities: the Model 400 and Model 800. Competition between gaming and software companies were strong, and Atari faced strong competition from the Apple II, Commodore PET, and TRS-80 computers

    1980-1990

In ‘81, IBM introduced its PC, causing a fast growth in the personal computer market. In 1989, Motorola announced the 68040 microprocessor, with about 1.2 million transistors, and Apple used the third generation of 68000 chips in Macintosh Quadra computers.

The Mosaic web browser was released. Mosaic was the first commercial software that allowed graphical access to content on the internet. The Mosaic was designed by Eric Bina and Marc Andreessen at the University of Illinois’s National Center for Supercomputer Applications for a Unix system running X-windows, but by 1994, Mosaic was available for several other operating systems such as the Mac OS, Windows and AmigaOS.

In 2011, the first google chromebook was released. Watson, an IBM Supercomputer beat the two best human Jeopardy players with a score greater than the two human players combined. Versions of photoshop, 3 new iPhones, a new Android phone, and other great computer advancements came out. Computer popularity is engulfing the populations, almost everyone has some kind of computer device on them at all times, and during this age of technology, there is surely more to come
