    Operation of Private Schools in Colorado

    -The first schools in the Territory of Colorado consisted mainly of private schools most likely due to the fact that it was more difficult to finance public schools.
    -Mr. F.B. Steinberger, Miss Indiana Sopris, Miss Woods and Miss Rings were the main four people that opened Private schools within 1859 to 1862.
  • First Established School in Colorado

    -O.J. Goldrick established the first school which was a Sunday School in Auraria which is present West Denver. It later on became both a Sunday School and day school.
    -Mr. Goldrick, the first person to teach in Colorado was born in Ireland and graduated from Irish University.
    -Received an average salary of $27 per month.
    -The school was supported by the subscription of parents whose children's attended the schools.
  • Establishment of Denver Union School

    The following spring, he repoened his school under the name of "Denver Union School". He employed Miss Miller as his personal assistant.
  • Miss Indiana Sopris opens Public School

    -Miss Indiana Sopris, daughter of Captain Richard Sopris opened a private school on Eleventh Street on May 7th, 1860.
    -She had the distinction of being the first women to teach in the territory
  • First School House built in Boulder County

    First School House built in Boulder County
    -The first school house was built in Boulder County in 1860.
    -Mr. Abner R. Brown passed through the villages of Boulder with a band of prospectors in June 1860.
    -Brown inquired the number of children that might of school age in the village. To his surprise, there were forty.
    -The question of a school house was supported by subscriptions.
    -The cost of bulding and furnishing was $1,200.
  • Miss Lydia Ring opens private school.

    Miss Ring taught a private school until the public schools were organized and later was principal of the West Denver schools.
  • Establishment of First Seminary in Colorado

    -The first Seminary was called the "Denver Seminary. It was opened by Miss Woods.
  • Establishment of District 1 and District 2

    -There were no tax supported schools in the Territory until 1862 when two districts were formed in Denver, one in East Denver known as district number one, and one in West Denver known as district number two.
    -Each district elected a board of education.
    -Buildings were rented in both districts and they each opened a two room school in December.
  • Rocky Mountain News Prints about Public Schools

    Rocky Mountain News prints "Our public schools are now in successful operation. in East Denver schools, there are 60 scholars in attendance under two teachers Mr. Lamb and Miss I. Sopris.
  • University of Denver

    On March 3, 1864 the university was founded as the Colorado Seminary by John Evans, the former Governor of Colorado Territory, who had been appointed by President Abraham Lincoln.
  • Pueblo organizes first district

    A two-room adobe building was erected on the site of the present Centennial High School Building in Pueblo.
    -In 1873 a one room brick building was opened on the southside and was soon repaced by four-room building.

    Colorado Agricultural College at Fort Collins
    Colorado State University, a Carnegie Research University with Very High Research Activity, is one of 68 land-grant colleges established under the Morrill Act (signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862). In 1870, six years before the Colorado Territory gained statehood, the institution was founded as the Colorado Agricultural College and in 1879 opened its doors to an eventual freshman class of twenty (two of which were family of the University’s president).
  • Progress of the Territory of Colorado

    -By the year of 1871 there were 160 school districts organized in the Territory with 120 schools established and 80 school houses built.
    -There were at that time 7,742 persons of school age in the Territory, 4.357 of whom were enrolled in the public schools.
    -By the year of 1873, the numer of school districts had increased from 160 to 243 with 180 schools and 125 school houses.
    -The number of persons of school age had increased to 14, 417 and the numner of enrolled in school to 7,456.
  • East Denver High School is Established

    East Denver High School is Established
    It will be the first high school in Colorado for many years due to the lack of legislation on establishing secondary schools.
  • Colorado College is Founded

    The school struggled for many years financially, but soon grew into a small university that is still standing today.
  • Colorado Becomes A State

    At this time, few children got an education and schools were essentially nonexistant.
  • Establishment of State of Superintendent of Public Instruction

    In 1876, the public school sytem of Colorado compared very favorably with that of most of the eastern states when the state constitution was adopted. The office of State Superintendent was established and twenty-five counties of the state had superintendents of schools.

    University of Colorado - Boulder Becomes Functional
    After receiving grants from the government, the school was able to begin instruction to forty-four students.

    -313 school districts, 219 school houses.
    -The number of persons of school age had increased to 21,612 with an enrollment of 14,085
    -Great increase in population and great interest in Education.

    The college was founded in 1874, but struggled with enrollment and only had six students by 1876.

    Colorado Schools Are Flourishing

    Nearly 12,000 students are enrolled in Colorado schools. Colorado will become a highly esteemed in terms of education. By 1912, Colorado has already begun educating foreign students due to the heavy mining population.
  • Teacher Qualifications Change

    Previously, teachers were only required to take a simple examination to be issued a teaching liscense, but in 1931, they were also required to have at least two years of experience or higher education.

    Colorado Board of Education

    In 1948, the Colorado State Constitution was amended to allow an elected state board of education. The Board of Education had the right to set up qualifications for and selections of the Commisioner of Education and a professional staff for the Department of Education. The first Colorado State Board of Education was elected in November 1950.

    8.0 to 3.6 million people completed college.
  • Keyes v. Denver School District 1

    Denver public schools were found guilty of using a segregated school system. They were one of the few states that had to be addressed by the government about purposefully segregating schools. It is also said that this segregated school system's effects can still be slightly seen in schools to this day.

    The CSAP becomes a large part of Colorado's standardized testing. This test was required by the NCLBA encated by President Bush.
  • Jefferson County Schools Face Backlash

    Jefferson Country School District faces backlash for teaching, or rather, neglecting to teach certain topics in U.S History. This would trigger major want for school reform and cirriculum changes.
