  • Basketball is invented

    In the fall of 1891 basketball is invented by Dr, James Naismith in Massachusetts.
  • First women's basketball game

    On this day the first women's basketball game was played at Smith College between the freshman and the sophomores. No men were allowed to attend the game
  • The NCAA

    On this day the NCAA was created and basketball was added to introcollegiate sports as a request from Theodore Roosevelt, because of the amount of deaths and serious injuries from football
  • The Olympics

    Basketball became recognized as an olympic sport. Since then the US has dominated basketball in the Olympics.
  • First NCAA Championship

    Oregon defeated Ohio state 46-33 in the first ever NCAA championship. Since then the NCAA tournament has become one of the most watched sporting events in the world.
  • The NBA

    The Basketball Association of America was formed between 11 different cities and teams. The name was later changed to the National Basketball Association (NBA)
  • First African American

    Chuck Cooper became the 1st African American to play in the NBA. Cooper was drafted by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA draft that year
  • The 100 Point Game

    On this day, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points playing for the Philadelphia Warrior's in a 169-147 win against the New York Knicks. This record still stands today as the most points ever scored my a single player in one game. What's even more amazing about this record is that it was achieved before the 3-point line
  • First High School player to turn pro

    Moses Malone became the first player to ever sign a professional contract straight out of high school when he signed with the Utah Stars of the ABA.
  • The 3 point line

    Ronnie Carr playing for Western Carolina, made the first 3-point shot ever in a game. The 3 pointe line would forever change the game of basketball, allowing players and opportunity for one extra point on a shot behind this line
