The creation
Basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts to condition young athletes during cold months. It consisted of peach baskets and a soccer style ball. He published 13 rules for the new game. He divided a class of 18 into two teams of nine players each and set about to teach them the basics of his new game. The objective of the game was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony. This started the game. -
First change
Every time a point was scored, the game was halted so the janitor could bring out a ladder and retrieve the ball. After a while, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed. The first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892. The game started evolving to what we play today. -
The First Change is Power
In 1897 the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) had taken over oversight of basketball activity from the YMCA. The change in the authority the change in the game. -
Another Change
In April 1905, representatives of fifteen colleges separately took over control of the college game, creating the collegiate "Basket Ball Rule Committee." Again there was a change in power and a change in the way the game was being played. -
More Development/ Change
The Committee was in turn absorbed into the predecessor of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1909. Again there was another change in power and a change in the way the game was being played. -
The Worth/ Significance in War
The First World War happened in 1914, and the US army started fighting in Europe in 1917. During WW1 the American Expeditionary Force brought basketball wherever it went. Together with the troops, there were hundreds of physical education teachers who knew basketball. I thought this displayed the way that sports can help stress relief. Development through Racism
In 1922, the first all-African American professional team was founded: the Rens (also known as New York Renaissance or Harlem Renaissance). This was a big step for Americans and trying to aid in the desegregation movement and trying to get racism to end. -
Another Change
The extremely popular NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament started was started in 1939. There is change while there is development in the game. -
Another Development Through Racism
From the late 1920s the African American Harlem Globetrotters were a successful touring team, winning the WPBT in 1940. Displays the development and the endurance that players of color had to face during this time period. -
The Last Development
The Basketball league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The league adopted the name National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball League (NBL). -
Today
As of the early 21st century, the NBA is the most significant professional basketball league in the US in terms of popularity, salaries, talent, and level of competition. What we see basketball today has been through a full evolution and has endured social stereotypes and had to deal with racism as well but it is here today as the great and fun game that anyone can play or attempt to play.
