Democritus
The exact birth of Democritus isn’t well known but they estimate it to bein 460 BCE and died about 370 BC.He was interested by very small things and his studies where pure madness.He found out the motion of atoms, changes and the way they get packed together. They have different colors, warmth and taste. He found out the movement of atoms, brought math’s into the study.If Democritus didn’t study he wouldn’t know the name of atoms, he found out many questions about the atom. -
John Dalton
John Dalton was born in 1766 in England. The views of the scientific community influence his work as he was a quaker who was not aloud to attend or teach at an English University. The discovery he found out was that matter could not be broken downand atoms are tiny particles. This discovery changed our views because all mater is extremely small, indivisible and indestructible particles.The atoms of one element are all exactly alike with weight. -
Sir William Crookes
Sir William Crookes was born 17th of June 1832 and died 4th of April 1919.William Crookes was not one to be influenced by others.He discovered an element called thallium. He also invented the radiometer, the spinthariscope and the crooks tube.If Sir William Crookes had not discovered that most atoms have an electrical current things such as the radiometer the crooks tube and the spinthariscope would not have been discovered today. -
Joseph John Thomson
Joseph John Thomson was born in 1856 in Cheetham Hill and died in 1940.Thomson was influenced because of his essay “Motion of Vortex Rings” that made him carry on with the atomic structure. John Thomson discovered that atoms are divisible and made up of even smaller particles. Inside the atom is it far smaller, negatively charged particles we now call electrons.The discovery changed the veiws of atom as it is like a plum pudding, positively charged is the cake and the electron are the fruit. -
Max Planck
Max Planck was born April 23rd 1858 and died October 4th 1947. Plank published the relationship between energy and radiation in the papers that made his name well known and he got a role to work and help the atomic structure.Helped us by creating the quantum theory by studying the nature of light and hot glowing matter by units of energy. This contributed to our understanding of the atom because he showed the movement of electrons. -
Ernest Rutherford
Ernest Rutherford was born in 1871 and died in 1937. The views of the scientific community influence his work as he went to England in 1907 to become a professor of Physics, and in 1919 he followed his dream and work on the atomic structure and discovered the atom had a lot of empty space inside the nucleolus. To find out he used a thin layer of gold and a fired stream of alpha particles.The evidence was the alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil with no deflection. -
Hans Geiger
Hans Geiger was born in 1882 and died 1945.He was influenced when he moved to Manchester Uni. He met Ernest Rutherford and they worked together for Ernest’s detection.In 1925 he became the professor of physics and developed the Geiger counter.He used a tube containing gas with wire at high voltage along the axis. A particle passing through the gas cause ionization and started a discharge in gas to resulting can be detected on a meter.He discovered with his counter the existence of light quantum. -
Niels Bohr
Niels Bohr was born in 1885 and died 1962.Niels Bohr helped other scientists in finding the basis of quantum mechanics. He discovered that protons and neutrons form a core with electrons circling in fixed orbits around the core.If Niels Bohr did not find the explanation of the properties of metals, buildings and structures would not be the same today. -
Erwin Schrödinger
Erwin Schrödinger was born in 1887 and died in 1961.Erwin Schrödinger was very frustrated with Bohr’s orbit theory and he believed he could fix it. In 1933 hewon the Nobel prize.The Schrödinger model helps show where the regions of space of electrons are most likely found. The model helps us find the space at a given time and tells us where it might be.Erwin Schrödinger helped changed the views of the atom as the Schrödinger model quantum numbers describe the size, shape and orientation. -
James Chadwick
James Chadwick was born in 1891 and died in 1974.When the war ended he returned to England to re-join with Ernest Rutherford who was head of Cambridge physics lab, Rutherford oversaw Chadwick PhD and made him assistant.Chadwick discovered the third sub-atomic partial called the ‘neutron’ which helps the protons in the atom nucleus from avoiding the proton from repulsing each other. Chadwick helped us to understand why atoms are together despite the the positive charges of the protons. -
Henry Moseley
Born on 23rd of November and died August 10th 1915. If Henry Moseley had not predicted a number of missing elements and there periodic numbers in the periodic table, there would be a different discovery with the ways the periodic table is set.He discovered that atoms of each element contain an individual positive charge in their nucleus.His discovery changed the way we view the atom, by discovering that an atoms originality comes from the number of protons in its nucleus. -
Aristotle
Aristotle was born in 384 BC and died in 322 BC.The biggest influence in Aristotle’s life would be the Macedonian Court.Aristotle discovered 4 atomic theory elements, they were Fire, Earth, Air and Water.He also believed that there were qualities to these elements like dryness, hotness, coldness and moistness.He changed scientists view on the atom, by discovering the basics, that is proven to be found what is an atom itself.
