The Magic Lantern
It was created by Athanisus Kircher. The magic lantern is an early predecessor of the modern day projector. It consisted of a translucent oil painting, a simple lens and a candle or oil lamp.

Thaumatrope
Created by physican John Ayerton Paris. It has different drawings on opposite ides of the disk. When the disk is spun, the images merge into one.

Phenakistoscope
Introduced by Belgian physicist John Plateau. The phenakistoscope used a spinning disc attached vertically to a handle. The user would spin it and look through the moving slits at the disc's reflection in the mirror.

Zoetrope
Invented by William Homer. It consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the slides. As it spins, the user can look through the slits at the picture across.

Kineograph (flip book)
Created by John Barnes Linnett. The user bends all of the pages back, normally with the thumb, then by a gradual motion of the hand allows them to spring free one at a time.

Praxinoscope
Invented by Charles-Emile Reynaud. This improved on the zeotrope by replacing its narrow viewing slits with an inner circle of mirrors.

Created J.Stuart Blackton. It was known as one of the first animated films. Consisted of a man and woman doing funny faces.

Fantasmagorie
In 1908, the French artist, Émile Cohl, created the first animated film using what came to be known as traditional animation. The film was called " Fantasmagorie ".
