Five Critical Events in American Education

  • Formation of the Committee of Ten

Formation of the Committee of Ten
This committee was created to design a standard school curriculum (The History 2016). This was very important to the history of education because before this happened, schools across the U.S. were all running differently. Standard curriculum allows a student to change schools and pick up where they left off. Without the standard grade system, a student would essentially have to stay in the same school for the whole education to ensure they learned everything the school deemed essential.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
Brown vs the Board of Education is one of the most significant court cases in the history of this country. This court case decided that "Separate but Equal" was unconstitutional and started to change the way race was viewed in the United States (Davis 2018). If the Brown family had decided not to fight to allow their daughter to attend an all white school, segregation of schools, restaurants, and churches would have continued. This was essential to the fight against racism in America.
  • The Passing of Title IX

    The Passing of Title IX
Title IX changed education and high school and college sports for women. This was the start of an increase in girls playing high school sports and girls receiving college scholarships to play sports. One can argue, that because of this law, women's professional sports leagues were formed (Understanding). Title IX was a necessary law to continue the fight towards gender equality, and without it high school would be a very different experience for women than it is today.
  • The Invention of Google

    The Invention of Google
Google has changed the structure of the education system. The need for once considered essential items like dictionaries, encyclopedias, and even books has been almost eliminated in schools. Google has enhanced the education system in many ways, and hindered it in others. The invention of google was the start of the new era of technology that we are in now. This has lead us to a primarily technology based education system (Google).
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
Whether viewed as good or bad, NCLB is important because it changed the way our education system functions. This was the first attempt to "ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education" (Title I 2004). NCLB implemented standardized testing, accountability systems, and intense teacher training all of which drastically changed what a typical school year looked like (Title I 2004).
