From England to America.
The pilgrims, a group of 102 sailed from England to America "The New World", on the ship Mayflower. They left England because they wanted religious and political freedom. The difficult journey continued for 65 days. There were storms, but they decided to continue. -
"The New World".
The pilgrims saw land in the distance. They saw a good place and decided to build a village there. Each family built a small house and they had land to grow vegetables and keep animals. The village was called Plymouth. The winter was very cold and 45 people died, but the pilgrims didn't lose hope. -

The pilgrims met a Native American for the first time and he introduced them to his tribe. After this, life came better for the pilgrims, because they taught the pilgrims how to grow corn, beans, and pumpkins. -
The British had 13 colonies.
The British had 13 colonies on the east coast of North America and about 2 and a half million colonists lived there. France and Spain also owned big areas of land in North America and wanted to influence the New World, too. -
The war.
From 1754 to 1763.
The British army fought the French over land in North America, the British won the war and got some of the French land. But the British government asked for taxes, the colonists thought this was ridiculous.
Finally the British government refused to pay the taxes and the 13 colonies join together to fight the British. -
The colonies declared independence.
The colonies declared the independence from Great Britain. Then the fighting started. The colonists, led by George Washington, fought many long, difficult battles. In the end, they defeated the British and signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783. They called their new nation the United States of America (USA). -
The Purchase Agreement.
The French still owned some land to west of the colonies. The French Emperor Napoleon offered to sell the land to the United states for $15 million, and the president Thomas Jefferson accepted the offer. After this the people started to move west. By 1848, the country extended from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. -
"Trail of Tears".
The Native American population began to suffer because the New World expanded. Their traditions and land were in danger. In the 1830s, it was created the first Indian territory in the area now called Oklahoma. Cherokee people died on the way and they called this journey the "Trail of Tears". -
The American Civil War (1861-1865) / 1860.
1860- The people in the north live in towns, but in the south, they live live on plantations and own slaves. The people in the north say it is cruel. Abraham Lincoln wants to end slavery. The people in the south want to leave the Union. Lincoln wants to keep the country together. -

1861- The south has got their Confederacy. It's got 11 states now. Richmond is the capital. They think they're a different nation from the Union in the north. Confederate soldiers attacked a Union fort called Fort Sumter yesterday. -

1864- The war is terrible, because thousands of people are dead. The people in the north and in the south are suffering, but the war can't continue for long because the Confederates are losing. They have got fewer soldiers than the Union. -

1865- The General Robert E. Lee, the Confederate army leader, surrendered to General Ulysses Grant, the Union army leader. Finally, the war its end, but more than 600.000 Americans are dead. Now, the slaves are free but they will never be the same again.
