Egyptians developed a invidivdual form of writing through the use of pictures. They used papyrus scrolls and thin reed brushes or pens. -

1300 BC
The Romans developed thier own form of writing by using a metal stylus and thin sheets of wax. -
1790's
The invention of the pencil lead was brought about during this era. -
1800-1850's
During the early 1800's the idea of a pen point constructed out of metal came about. It wasn't until the 1830s that steel nibs became a common household item. By the 19th century metal nibs replaced quill pens and by 1850 they had been replaced by steardy nibs. -
1822
The quill was invented and used as the primary writing instrument in the Western World. -
1884
The first fountain pen was created and distributed. -
1940s
The first modern version of a ballpoint was created by Josef (Lazlo) and Georg Biro. This is where the term 'Biro' steamed from. In 1945 the biro was sold in the U.S as the first pen that writes underwater. -
1953
The first inexpensive ball point pen became available due to the French Baron, Bich, as he began manufacturing the pens at a lower unit cost. -
1960s
The felt-tip pen was invented and released to the U.S. market. In addition, highlighters and felt-tipped markers were then created. -
1980-1990
The introduction of roller ball pens were made in the early 1980s. What made these pens so unique was the mobile ball and liquid ink that helped the writer produced a think smooth line. -
1990
Rubber grips were created on some pens to allow the writer to gain a better grip and to allow more comfort when writing. -
1997
The craze of 'ring pen' was in full force as the new improved pen was designed for individuals to be able to write without gripping the pen with the usual 3 fingers.
