    The Great Negro Migration
    Between 1890 and 1920, two million African Americans migrated from the rural south to the northern cities, where they would find opportunities and less discrimination. This relates to the movie becuase Janie leaves her 'husband' and goes with Joe into a town where she knew she would live better than working on a farm for the rest of her life.

    Niagara Movement
    THe Niagara Movement was founded by W.E.B Du Bois, it was galled the Niagara movement becuase the first meeting started in the Niagara Falls. The group had originally planned to meet on the American side of Niagara Falls, but was denied accommodations by racially prejudice hotel managers.

    National Association of the Advancement of Colored People is founded W.E.B Du Bois. The NAACP critcized the President, Woodrow Wilson, whoinroduced segregation into federal government.

    The Ex-Colored Man by James Weldon James, was about a man that forced to choose between his black heritage and culture.
  • United Negro Improvements

    Marcus Garvey arrived in Harlem and founded united negro improvements. 10,000-15,000 African Americans joined the silent protest parade. This relates to the movie, "The Eyes are watching God", because Janie Starks leaves Logan Killicks for a better life and to not work in hard labor.

    369th Infantry Regiment
    the 369th infantry returns home from World War I, They retured to a Hero's welcome in Harlem.
  • W.E.B Du Bois

    W.E.B Du Bois
    W.E.B Du Bois organized the Pan- African American congress in parris. He wanted African American leaders to meet to denounce the idea of gradual progress. This relates to the movie when Joe Starks and Janie move into a small town and slowly make the town into a community slowly but surely.

    President Wilson finally condemned lncing. Lynching was a movement when mostly white people would hang colored people or other people who were against segregation and burn them as they were hung. The Legislation was passed by the House of Represenatives.

    The Universal Negro Improvement Association is a black nationalist organization founded by Marcus Garvey.
  • Jazz Era

    Jazz was showcased at Aeolian Hall in New York in "The first American Jazz concert". This would benefit for the African Americans because they would make money but being muscians.
  • The Harom Foundation

    The Harmon Foundation holds its first annual art exhibition for African American artwork. Palmer Hayden and Hale Woodruff won top awards.
  • Wallace Thurman "Harlem"

    Wallace Thurman "Harlem"
    Harlem by Wallace Thurman was first introduced in Broadway, becoming the most successful production of the time by a black author. He also wrote a nvel called, "The Blacker The Berry". it explores discrimination within the black community based on skin color.

    Muscians moved to New York for work. The big Migration during the late 1920's and 1930's helped establish New York as the home for black music. The negro's were moving North for a better lifestyle.

    Many Harlem Renaissance writers and Artists found employment in a government sponsered program, The Works Project Administration, used to create American Jobs. A famous writer named Langston Hughes was a great poet that wrote about the lifes of African Americans.

    Harlem's first race riot, sparked off by rumors of the beating of a teenage shoplifter.
