    Between 5000,000 to 1 million Taino people lived on the island of Ayti. The Taino's are the native people of the island, they were very skilled artisans and did great woodwork. They migrated to this island from South America.

    Columbus
    Columbus lands on the island of Ayti, which is still inhabited by the Taino's. He decides to change the name to "Hispaniola." They enslave the Tainos and treat them like savages. This leads to a declne in population of the Taino's.

    Sugar cane plantations are introduced to Hispaniola. It is very hard and dangerous work for the slaves to make sugar. Sugar becomes very popular which makes Saint Domingue one of the wealthiest colonies of its time.

    The Treaty of Ryswick gives France 1/3 of Hispaniola. They name this part of the island Saint Domingue. The french were already on the island for quite awhile but now it is made official.

    The French Revolution starts with The Storming of the Bastlle. This is when Louis XVI becomes scared so he hires swiss guards to protect him from the french citizens. The citizens see these guards and assume that Louis hired them to attack the them. They storm the Bastille to get suplies to fight.

    In Saint Domingue the affranchis demand equal rights with the whites from the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. They send some representatives to France to request these rights from the French government. Unfortunetly, they are denied.

    The French government gives full rghts to the affranchis in Saint Domingue. The white colonists wont acknowledge this so the blacks revolt. After this revolt the French government decide to take back the decree and sends comissioners to reestablich slavery. The black slaves and the affranchis team up.

    Louis XVI gives equal rights back to the affranchis.
    Also Spain and Britian both want to take advantage of all the chaos in Saint Domingue by launching some military campaigns to take control of the colony.

    Toussaint L'Ouverture is a rebel leader who temporarily joins Spain to defeat the French attempts to re-establish slavery.

    France Gets Rid of Slavery
    France has now officially abolished slavery in France and its colonial possessions.
  • L'Ouverture Joins the French

    L'Ouverture Joins the French
    L'Ouverture ditches the Spanish to join the French instead because they abolished slavery.

    The Treaty of Basel
    Spain signs the Treaty of Basel with France. This gave its colony of Santo Domngo to France which means that the Spanish no longer own any part of Hispaniola.

    Andre Rigaud
    Andre Rigaud is another rebel leader who works together with L'Ouverture. Together they push out the British from Hispaniola.

    The War of Knives
    The War of Knives begins when the two main sources of power (L'Ouverture and Rigaud) disagree on whos ideas should be taken for how the islad should be. L'Ouverture represented the blacks (North and West), while Rigaud represented the affranchis (South).

    After war breaks out L'Ouverture wins with the help of the British. He is now the official leader of the colony.

    L'Ouverture makes a constitution that abolishes slavery, all citizens have equal rights., and it also outlawed the practice of voodoo.Napoleon sees the new constitution as a threat and will not recognize it.

    Jean-Jacques Dessalines makes Haiti independent and he crowns himself emporer for life.
