1232
Gunpowder
Guns began with the Chinese discovering gunpowder. They started off with just rockets filled with gunpowder and tied to bamboo sticks. They soon recognized the power of the gunpowder alone. -
Period: 1232 to
Evolution of the gun
-
1288
First Gun
Chinese Fire Lance. It was a spear. Or lance, coated in gunpowder. It could act as a flamethrower, and it could launch projectiles. It was a bamboo tube with gunpowder inside, that could be loaded with projectile or darts that when the gunpowder was ignited would shoot the projectile out. When an enemy saw how effective this was, they started their own gunpowder and gun design. -
1364
First Recorded Use of the Gun
Before the matchlock was invented, guns had to be manually lit by holding a lit match into the touch hole. This would start the reaction that propelled the bullet down the barrel. -
1450
Matchlock firing
First mechanical firearm. When lowered, the hammer lit a wick, which then reacted with the black powder. -
1500
Rifling is invented
The process of putting notches in the barrel so the bullet comes out spinning, improving accuracy and aerodynamic. -
1509
Wheel lock guns
About a hundred years later, guns were innovated. These guns were called wheel lock guns. Wicks were now replaced the wheel lock that generated a spark for igniting the gunpowder. -
1537
The Shotgun
The first shotgun was a simple rifle type gun, but was loaded with "shot", -a bunch of little bullets/pebbles/gravel- instead of one small round ball. -
Flintlock weapons
Flintlock weapons open the flash pan and ignited it with a spark. They are said to be invented around 1600, although the exact date is unknown. -
The Revolver is invented
Invented in 1814, by Elisha Haydon Collier, then revolutionized by Samuel Colt in 1836 with a percussion cap, revolvers use a spinning cylinder to load automatically after shot, resulting anywhere from 5-8 shots. -
Sniper Rifle
The first sniper rifle was simply a high-power rifle that could shoot up to 800 yards. -
Shotgun Ammo
Augustus Demodion made a shot that held a bunch of smaller bullets and was more effective then gravel and small rocks which was used before. -
Colt Revolver
These, the colt revolvers, were the first mass-produced, multi-shot, revolving firearms. -
Samuel colt improves the revolver
Samuel Colt revolutionizes the revolver with a percussion cap, resulting in the first "true" revolver. -
Rifle
The rifle had grooves cut into the inside of the barrel causing the bullet to spin thus reducing air resistance, increasing range and stability, greatly improving accuracy. -
The Bullet
The first pointed bullet had a hollow base that expanded when it was fired, allowing it to grip the rifiling, along the inside of the barrel of the gun. -
Gatling gun
The Gatling gun was designed by the American inventor Dr. Richard J. Gatling in 1861 and patented November 4, 1862. Some argue that this was not a real machine gun because it was required a person to crank it to make it shoot. -
The First maxim Gun
The mechanism of the Maxim gun employed one of the earliest recoil-operated firing systems in history. The idea is that the energy from recoil acting on the breech block is used to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one, instead of a hand-operated mechanism. Maxim's earliest designs used a 360-degree rotating cam to reverse the movement of the block, but this was later simplified to a toggle lock. -
Borchardt pistol
This innovation was a gun that featured a removable, separate magazine in the grip of the gun. -
colt m19
this gun was in testing in 1906. It has over 2 million copies of it self and it was designed for world war 2. -
Browning M2
The M2 Machine Gun or Browning .50 Caliber Machine Gun is a heavy machine gun designed toward the end of World War I by John Browning. -
The first assault rifle is made
The Stg-44 was the first assault rifle, invented in 1944 in Nazi Germany. It had a rate of fire of 500-600 rpm. Modern assault rifles (such as the SA80, Ak-47 & the futuristic XM-29), have repeatedly advanced in technology with improved accuracy, stability, rpm or reliability. -
ak47
The ak47 was made by the Russians. It was introduced in the Cold War. People did not know wha it was at the time. -
M16 (assault rifle)
the M16 was invented by the air force for attacks and was used as the primary weapon in the Vietnam War. -
AA 12(shotgun)
The AA 12 is gas powered and is used for close quarters like on a street or in a Jungle -
Red dot sight
The red dot sight can be mounted to a gun at any distance from the person because distance does not affect the use of the sight. This also allows the sight to be used with heavy recoil weapons. This allowed for the user to see exactly where the bullet will strike the target. -
M4 carbine (assault rifle)
The M4 carbine was used when The U.S.A went to panama and is still used today. -
m110 sass(sniper rifle)
The m110 sass was first used in Afghanistan and mostly used by Airborne Rangers. At the time it was voted best sniper rifle. -
FN Scar( assault Rifle)
This gun is very unique. It's range is two football fields. And the user can modify it for their mission. -
m-249(light machine gun)
This gun very highly gas powered. It is a one man portable weapon. It's range is 800 meters. -
