Army troops attacked and massacred the surrendering Cheyenne tribe. Congressional investigators condemned the Army actions, but nobody was punished. -
The 7th Cavalry
Custer’s 7th Cavalry was responsible for the discovery of gold in the area. Custer bragged about his findings and caused a gold rush. He and his forces attacked another force of 2500, while they only had 250, and was wiped out. -
The Great Sioux War
The war was a result of multiple battles and negotiations between the U.S. and the tribes. When gold was found in the Black Hills, the U.S. reneged on their agreement that the Black Hills were unceded as Indian Territory, redrawing the boundaries of the treaty, and confining the Sioux people — traditionally nomadic hunters — to a farming lifestyle on the reservation. -
Battle of Little Bighorn
George Armstrong Custer led his troops into battle against Sitting Bull and they lost. The Battle of Little Bighorn was a temporary victory for the Native Americans because the U.S. government was determined to put down the threat to settlers. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
The Battle occurred on the day after the surrender. The Sioux were massacred and this marked the end of the conflict between the army and the Plains Indians.
