Chinese Nationalists oust the last Qing emperor, Puyi
Henry Puyi was a prisoner in his own palace for almost all of his life. When the Chinese Nationalist Party took over China, they kicked out Puyi. Forcing him to go to the Japanese embassey where he then unknowingly turned on the Chinese. -
WWI begins, Austria declares war on Serbia
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, of Austira, and his wife Sophia take a trip to the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo. There Garvillo Princip, member of the black hand, shot the Archduke and his wife. Outraged, Austria declares war on the Serbian people. -
U.S. enters war
Arthur Zimmermann, of Germany, sends a telegram to Mexico, saying that they will help reconquer land that has been taken over by the U.S. The information is intercepted by Americans, and they declare war on Germany. -
Armistice is signed as Allies defeat Central Powers
Russia had already backen out of the war at this point, Germany could see their victory. On their way to defeat France, German troops gave up and surrended. -
Gandhi leads Indian campaign of civil disobedience
After Indian soldiers return back from war, they were promised they would be rewarded with Independence from the British. British did not grant them independence. Gandhi lead several peaceful protests, including boycotting British cloth, salt, and schooling systems. -
Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into a republic
At the end of WWI the Ottoman emprie was forced to give up all of its territories, except of Turkey. The Sultan was powerless, Kemal, a general with the nationalists overthrew the Sultan. Kemal started to modernize/westernize the counrty. He renamed himself ataturk (father of the turks). -
Mao Zedong heads long march
Jiang Jieshi, nationalist, surronded the communists mountain stronghold, leaving them with no choice but to flee. About 100,000 communsits, with Mao leading fled. They went a total of 6,000 miles, through China.
