Chinese Nationalists oust the last Qing emperor, Puyi
The world is changing all of the time. Emperor Puyi never got to experience these changes while growing up. He was trapped in the Forbidden City. Many Chinese Nationalists rose up to overthrow the emperor. These nationalists eventually succeeded in 1911. -
World War I begins as Austria declares war of Serbia
The Archduke Franz Ferdinand saw does not want Bosnia to become independent. To show his spport, he visits Sarajeco, Bosnia with his wife. This trip upsets the nationalists (Society of the Black Hand) and they assassinate him and his wife. This outrages Austria-Hungary and they want to punish Serbia. Russia backs up Serbia and Germany backs up Austria-Hungary. War is declared and the fighting begins. -
U.S. Enters the war
Germany keeps declaring unresticted submarine warfare. This upsets the United States. To add it this, Arthur Zimmerman stated that Germany would help Mexico “reconquer” the land it had lost to the US if Mexico would ally itself with Germany. The United States then entered the war to protect their country. -
Armistice signed as Allies defeat Central Powers
Russia's withrawal from the war allowed Germany to send nearly all of its forces to the Western Front. Germans mounted one final, massice attack on the Allies in France. The Allies launched a counterattack to start the Second Battle of the Marne. Allies advanced steadily while the Central Powers began to crumble. Bulgarians and Ottoman Turks surrendered and the armistice was signed to end the war. -
Gandhi leads Indian camapaign of civil disobedience
Gandhi lauched his campaign of civil disobedience to weaken the British government's authority and economic power over India. He called on Indians to refuse to buy British goods, attend goverment schools, pay British taxes, or vote in elections. Gandhi staged a succeessful boycott of British cloth and urged all Indians to weave their own cloth. He then organized a demonstration to dfy the hated Salt Act. Gandhi and his followers walked 240 miles to the sea and began to make their own salt. -
Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into Republic
Mustafa Kemal became president of the new Republic of Turkey. He starts ushering reforms: separted the laws of Islam from the laws of the nation, abolished religious courts and created a new legal system based on European law, granted women the right to vote and to hold public office, and launched government-funded programs to industrialize Turkey and to spur economic growth. -
Mao Zedong heads Long March
Nationalists attacked the Communists repeatedly but failed to drive them out. After Jiang gathered an army of at least 700,000, they realized that they were outnumbered. 100,000 Communist forces fled. They began a hazardous, 6,000-mile-long journey. Thousands died from hunger, cold, exposure, and battle wounds.
