    The Cotton Gin
    The Cotton Gin was made in the South on march 14th 1794. It is a machine that made the cotton process go faster. It removed the seeds from cotton fiber. This machine was important because it became America's leading export. However, it brought conflicts because it offered a justification to maintain and expand slavery.
  • Virginia's repeal

    Virginia repealed much of the 1782 law that allowed a more liberal emancipation of slaves. This was important because this law made it much more difficult and more expensive to emancipate slaves. This brought problems becuase this event angered the north and it challenged the “government vs. state’s power” issue.

    The Embargo Act of 1807 was passed by the U.S congress in december 22nd 1807 between the U.S and Britan trade.This act was passed in answer to the Bristish orders, restricting neautral shipping and to Napoleon's restrictive continental system. Thi act showed the importance of the restricting neutral trade. However, ot forbade all international trade to and from America's ports, making it a conflict.

    Missouri Compromise
    The missouri compromise took place in March 3rd 1820 between the North and the South.This was imporant because Missouri was admitted as a slave state and to keep the balance, Maine was admitted as a free state. Also, the compromise stated that slavery be prohibited in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase or the southern border of Missouri.

    The tariff of 1828, was a protective tariff passed by the congress of the U.S. on May 19th, 1828. It was important because it was designed to protect industry in the Northern U.S. However, it brought conflicts because it affected the South. They had to pay higher prices on goods.

    New Jersey and Pennsylvania pass laws. This is important becuase they require a judicial hearing before an alleged fugitive slave can be removed from the state. However, it's a problem because this upsets many of the southerners because they see slaves as property and demand fugitive slaves to be returned to their owners without question.

    Fugitive State Law of 1850
    Passed to adere to the Compromise of 1850, under the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, special federal comissioners were allowed to determine the fate of alleged fugitives without the benefit of a jury trial or even testimony by the accused person. It was important because the law also prohibited local authorities from interfering with the capture of slaves. However it brought problems because it forced citizens to assist with captures when called upon by federal agents.

    The compromise of 1850 were 5 bills that were intended to stave off sectional strive. It involved Henry Clay, Danel Webster etc. This was important because it was supposed to deal woth slaves in territories in order to keep northen and southern interests in balance. It also created a boundary between Texas and New Mexico . However, it made it easier for southerns to recover fugitive slaves.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel written by Harriet stowe that was published in 1852. It was important because it helped lay the groundwork for the Civil War. However, it brought some peoblems because it created some stereotypes on black people.

    Thia act was passed on May 30th 1854 by the U.S. congress. It allowed people on the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves wether or not to allow slavery within their borders. It was important because it served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 wchich prohibit slavery on the north. However, it brought conflict because the South got infuriated because they are pro-slavery.

    "Bleeding Kansas" was a term used to describe the violent hostilities between pro and anti-slavery forces in the Kansas territory during the mid 1850's. Located at Kansas and Missouri. It involved people like John Brown and William Quantrill.This was important because two territories were to be formed, Kansas and Nebraska. One would become a slave state and the other a free state. However, not everything worked out well;Kansas did not get what they anticipated. Making it a problem.

    The Dred Scott case was on March 1857. It involved Dredd scott and chief Justice Roger. This case was brought between the court by Dredd Scott because he was a slave who had lived with his owner in a free state before returning to the slave state of Missouri. It was important because one of the most controversial events preceding the American Civil War. However, the Dred Scott decision incensed abolitionists and heightened North-South tensions, which would erupt in war just three years later.

    In the Illinois senatorial campaign of 1858, the Democratic candidate, Stephen A. Douglas, was opposed by Republican Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, a young lawyer, challeneged Douglas, this was a problem because he was a leading political figure.This was important because he challenged him to a series of debates that were vital issues of the day. Though Lincoln did not win the election, he became very famous through these debates.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    On October 16, 1859, John Brown led a small army of 18 men into the small town of Harper's Ferry,Virginia. His plan was to instigate a huge slave rebellion in the South. This was important because it succeed to deepen the divide between the North and South. The Republican Party adopted a specific plank condemning John Brown and his ill-fated plan.Which was a problem.

    Harper's Ferry is seized by John Brown
    On Oct 18th 1859, John Brown led a group of 21 men to seize Harpers' Ferry, Virginia, This was important because he wanted to obtain a supply of weapons to arm slaves and lead them in revolts. However, Brown was placed on trial for treason to the state of Virginia, and his men were all either killed or captured by a detachment of federal soldiers led by Colonel Robert E. Lee.

    The United States presidential election of 1860 was the 19th quadrennial presidential election. The election was on Tuesday, November 6th, 1860. This was important because it served as the immediate impetus for the outbreak of the American Civil War. However, Kentucky and Missouri, attempted to remain neutral.
  • SC secedes from the Union

    SC secedes from the Union
    South Carolina called for a convention to SECEDE from the Union. State by state, conventions were held and the Confederacy was formed. President Jefferson Davis was elected. This event wa important because South Carolina's action resulted in conventions in other southern states.
