On may 10th 1924 J.Edgar Hoover was appointed acting director of the FBI because of the Warren Harding scandal, by the end of the year he had the title of director. He would be be the director of the FBI until his death in 1972. He was an extremely effective leader. He was known to keep secret files on high profile people. -

The stock market crash took place on black tuesday October 29th 1929. 16 billion in stocks were lost on this day which lead to a major economic crsis. What would be known as a 10 year period the great depression, the unemployment rate was 25%. People were homeless, people were starving it was the worst economic downfall this country had ever seen. -
The Dust Bowl Begins
The dust bowl was a intense drought in the great plains region and nearby states that caused intense dust storms it lasted from 1930 to 1936. The cause was poor management of the land a tense change of what was growing there the land was changed from mostly growing stock to plowing millions of acres of land to start growing wheat. After the following springs winds there were piles of dirt everywhere. These dust storms were so bad that sometimes they carried all the way out to the east coast. -

In 1932 Germany was in shambles, they were angry about the reparations they were paying for WW1 with what seemed like unfixable econmonic ruins. Hitler was a captivating speaker which quickly got the attention of the german people. He was later appointed chancellor by president Paul Hindenburg. -

In November of 1932, President Franklin Roosevelt was elected into office to serve his first of four terms. He was elected because it was believed that he could combat the great depression better than his opponent Herbert Hoover who americans tended to blame for the great depression. Roosevelt won this election by a landslide, and proved to be one of the most popular and effective presidents. -

The works project administration (WPA) was part of roosevelt's new deal program. This program provided work to 8.5 million americans. This program provided construction work , they build thousand miles of road, bridges, public buildings, ect. This was a very cuciel program providing so many people jobs. -
J.J. Braddock Wins Heavyweight Boxing Title
J.J. Braddock also known as cinderella man since his almost fairytale like rise from coming from a poor home to be the heavyweight boxing champion. On June 13 1935 underdog J.J. Braddock and Max baer were set up for a fight for the heavyweight boxing title. Only a year after coming out of retirement J.J. Braddock unanimously won the heavyweight boxing title. -
Olympic Games in Berlin
The olympic games took place in august of 1936 in berlin germany, the Nazi party had just risen to power in germany it was a very politically charged enviorment. Hitler wanted this to be a chance to prove the aryan race was superior, this is not what happen though. This was the first olymic game where a black person participated. Kistallnacht which is German for crystal night is w a night of terror for the jewish people. Nazis had destroyed jewish businesses, torched synogoys, and attcked jewish people. After 30,000 sum people were arrested and sent to concentration camps. -

The Wizard of Oz Premiers in Movie Theaters on august 25 1939. It would prove to be one of the most successful and popular movies. It was a fantasy story based on the book. The movie starred a young Judy Garland, Garland won an oscar for this movie. -

Semptemer 1st 1939 Germany ambushed Poland, they wanted to regain there lost land from WWI and rule Poland. Germany used the blitzkrieg strategy using a heavy hand of explosives to begin. He quickly began setting up his alliances, he wanted the Nazi party to rule. -

CCC is Created
The civilian conservation corps(CCC) was put into action on april 5th 1933 by executive order. This program was part of FDRs new deal program. This program was mostly for young unmarried men. They lived in camps and would do things such as plant trees and build flood barriers. This program provided 3,000,000 men employment during its 9 year duration.
