Jonas and Gabriel stange connection
Jonas' dad came home and brought a baby named Gabriel. The family saw this child and realized it looked a lot like Jonas. The text states ''Almost everyone in the communinty had dark eyes except for Jonas,a female five,and Gabriel. This is very imortant to the novel because it shows the connection between Jonas and Gabriel and how that conection is going to affect the situaton in the end. -
Jonas sees beyond.
One day while Jonas is playing catch with an apple, with his best friend Asher he notices something stange about the apple.The apple had suddenly changed. After this discovery Jonas took the apple home to examine it. When he took it home for examination he found nothing wrong with the apple.This event is important because it gives us information that would be helpful later on in the book.Also this event gives us a clue about Jonas' assignment
and how this ability would relate to his assignment. -
Jonas receives stirrings.
In Jonas' family they have a ritual that they do every morning. This ritual is sharing your dream with your family member. Jonas did not contribute much but this morning is different. Jonas dreamt about wanting to bathe his friend Fiona but she would not allow it.He told his parents this and first thing they realized was that he had stirrings.The first sign of stirrings is wanting.This is important to the novel because this shows how Jonas received it and the signs of it. -
Jonas becomes the Receiver of Memory
Jonas and his family are preparing to go to the ceremony.At the ceremony the kids have numbers in which order they should go up on stage.Jonas is number 19.The cheif elder says the number 16,17,18, and 20. Jonas had been skipped and feels like he had done wrong .The chief elder apologizes. He reads Jonas had been selected as Receiver of Memeory. -
Rules for the Receiver
When Jonas became the Receiver of Memory he was given a set of rules. These rules were to be followed as the Receiver. Under any cther circumstances you can not break these laws. When Jonas was in pain because of the memeories he was not able to get releive of pain because this pertained to his asignment. This is important because ithis shows how Jonas did not break the laws. Jonas showed courage an bravery in order not to break the laws. This event is very important to the novel. -
Jonas receives his first memory.
The Giver transmitted the memory of snow into Jonas. At first Jonas felt the man's hand on his back but what later it dissapered. Jonas was in a cold enviromentnt that was full of snow. Jonas rode on a sled. Jonas felt excited and happy. This is important to the novel because this talks about what the receiver does and how the memories are related to his job. Also this is the first time Jonas feels happy. -
Jonas worst memory,war
One day the Giver gave Jonas an disturbiing memory. This disturbing memory was about war. Jonas saw people dead, begging for water and horses lying on the ground. Jonas heard the thuds of cannons. Jonas could not bare it anymore and welcomed death himself. The Giver apologized to Jonas. Later on in the book his frirnds plays war and Jonas tells them to stop.This is important to the novel because it shows Jonas experincing real pain. -
Jonas favorite memory
After the disturbing memory The Giver gave Jonas a memory. Jonas was in a room filled with people. These people were all family. There were the parents, the kids and grandprents. They were celebrating a holiday. All of the family cared for each other. respected each other and most imoportantly they loved each other. The Giver told Jonas that the family felt more complete.because of love. The world they live in has no love. This is important to the novel because Jonas learns the word love. -
Jonas learns about release.
One day The Giver takes Jonas to the Hall of Closed Records to watch something. Jonas sees his father with one of the twins. His father injects a liquid in to the baby's vein. The baby slowly dies. Jonas shouts ''My father killed, my father killed. Jonas says that he does not want to go back home. The Giver informs his family unit Jonas would be staying with him. This is important to the novel because Jonas learns about what release is really abouut. -
Jonas leaves the comunity with Gabriel
Jonas leaves the community with Gabriel who was supposed to be released.The Giver tranfers memories of courage and bravery to Jonas.They leave and the Giver stays. Jonas steals his father's bike and food. They traveled for a long time. They saw search planes and called out planes. It became very cold Jonas transfered the memories to Gabriel to keep him warm. Jonas felt happy because of the memories of his friend.Jonas rode on the sled and saw lights and heard music but it was perhaps an echo.
