    Illinois is the first state in the USA to disriminalize homosexual act between consenting adults in private.
  • First Transgender Organization

    the first transgender organization, The National Transsexual Counseling Unit is created in San Francisco.
  • Stonwall Riots

    Patrons of the the Stonwall Inn fight back in a police raid, causing three days of riots as well as transforming the gay rights movement fromaone limited group of activists into a widespread protest for equal rights and acceptance for Gays, Lesbians and Transsexuals

    In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its postion on the mental disorders list.
  • Harvey milk Appointed to the Board of permit appeals.

    George Moscone, mayor of San francisco appoints Harvey Milk to the Board of Permit Appeal, making Mr.Milk the First open gay city commissiner in the United States. Milk then goes on to run for California State Assembly. Monscone is forced to fire him from the Board of Permit Appeals after only five weeks. Milk also co-founds the San Francico Gay Democratic Club after his lost election.

    Harvey Milk runs for city supervisor for San Fracisco. He runs on a socially liberal platform to and he opposes the goverments involvment in personal sexual matters. Milk, places 10th of 32 candidates and earns 16,900 votes.
  • Harvey Milk

    Harvey Milk makes national news when he sworn in as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Running against 16 other candidates, he won by 30%.Milk his term by putting forward a civil rights bill that outlaws sexual orientation discrimination.
  • Assassination

    On November 27 Harvey Milk & Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White. San Francisco pays tribute to Harvey Milk by naming several locations after him, including Harvey Milk Plaza& Harvey Milk Memorial
    Gay Democratic Club.
  • National March on Washington

    About 75,000 people marched on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights in Washington D.C in October. It was the largest political gathering for LGBT rights to date.

    At the Democratic Nation Convention held in New York City's Maddison Square Garden, democrate took a stance in supporting gay rights and added the following to their plank.

    In 1993 The U.S military introduced the " Dont ask, Dont Tell" Policy allowing gays to serve in the military but benning ALL sexual activity.
  • Vermont first state

    Vermont becomes the first State to legally recognise the civil union between Gay or Lesbian couples. This entitles the same benefits, privileges and responsiblities as spouses. However it stoped short of referring same sax unions as marriage.
