The French Revolution Timeline

  • King Louis XVI crowned King of France

    King Louis XVI crowned King of France
    King Louis XVI came to the throne in 1774. He was the last Bourbon king of France and just let the French Revolution come bashing down on him. This led to his execution in 1793.
  • American Revolution

    American Revolution
    The American Revolution was a war against the British and the Americans. France had agreed with Britain to fincance the Americans in the war. This had lead them to a bakrupt and had a financial downfall with thier government.
  • Calling of the Estates General

    Calling of the Estates General
    A lot of bad things had happened in France. France has a ton of poor people and they are going bankrupt! All of this led to the king of France (Louis XVI) calling the Estates General.
  • Formation of the National Assembly

    Formation of the National Assembly
    The 3rd Estate felt like they weren't being treated right so they formed a National Assembly. They had the King (Louis XVI) make economic reforms because they were not being treated the same as the 1st or the 2nd Estate.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    Tennis Court Oath
    The representatives of the 3rd Estate and the people that even supported the National Assembly (Some of the 2nd Estates or even 1st Estates) met up with each other. They went to a tennis court to swear to not divide till France estabalished a constitution.
  • Storming of the Bastille

    The Bastille was stormed and seized by revolutionaries of the 3rd Estate. This led to the Revolution of France.
  • French Women force Louis XVI to leave Versailles

    French Women force Louis XVI to leave Versailles
    A group of women and other Parisians marched to Versailles. Their arrival demanded that the King give them food and mostly bread. The King decided to part with them, but it wasn't enough because they went into Marie Antoinette's headquarters. The King and his family barely escaped and they left Versailles.

    They thought the war would help unite the country and wanted to spread their ideas through Europe. France declared war against Austria.
  • The National Convention is formed

    The National Convention is formed
    This was elected to provide a new constitution for France after the execution of the monarchy. It took part of the rid of Robespierre and later approved a constitution to replace the National Convection.
  • Louis XVI is executed

    Louis XVI is executed
    Louis XVI was accused of working with other european country power, so this led him being executed to the guillotine by the National Convention.
  • Reign of Terror

    Reign of Terror
    This happened to get rid of France's enemies and to also protect their country from other outsiders. Robespierre was the guy who led that and all of that led to him getting executed (1794) because people got tired of all the killing.
  • The Thermidorian Reaction

    The Thermidorian Reaction
    This led to to downfall of Robespierre, the Jacobins, and the leader of the radical group. This ended the Reign of Terror.
  • The Directory is formed

    The Directory is formed
    The Directory was set up by the constitution to help solve the issues of France. It didn't really go anywhere, but it lead to the rise of Napoleon.
  • Napoleon takes power

    Napoleon takes power
    Napoleon was the general of the French armies. He was into military as he grew up so he knew a lot about war. Later, he became emperor and did a lot of things for the country.
  • Napoleon invades Russia

    Napoleon invades Russia
    He led his army into the Niemen River and he never set foot there before. His army got wiped out because of the time of the year they went to go fight.
  • Battle at Waterloo

    Battle at Waterloo
    This was against the Prussians and the French army, but he let Prussia get time to have a surprise attack. This was his last war and when he got defeated, he was sent to Saint Helena.
