French Revolution begins
The French Revolution begins which was more complex, more violent, and more radical. It tried to create a new political order and new social order. The causes of the French Revolution included long-range problems and immediate forces. -
National Assembly adopts Declaration of the Rights of Man
The Declaration proclaims freedom and equal rights for all men. Freedom of speech and the press were affirmed. The Declaration did not include women. -
Olympe de Gouges writes declaration of rights for women
Olympe de Gouges wrote the Declaration for women as she felt that women should have the same rights as men. She believed that people who don't think women are equal to men are ignorant which leads to the corrupt government. -
National Assembly completes new constitution
The new constitution set up a limited monarchy. The king would no longer make laws. The assembly was to consist of 745 representatives. -
War with Austria
The rulers of Austria and Prussia threatened to use force to restore Louus XVI to full power. Insulted, The Legislative Assembly declared war with Austria in 1792. The French fared badly in the initial fighting. -
National Convention splits into factions
The members split into factions over the fate of the king. The to most important factions were the Girondins and the Mountain. Both factions were part of the Jacobin club. -
Disputes between Girodins and the Mountain
The Commune favored radical change and put pressure on the National Convention. Peasants in western France as well as the inhabitants. Cities refused to accept the National Conventions authority. -
King Louis XVI is executed
The Mountain won at the beginning of 1793 when it convinced the National Convention to pass a decree condemning to Louis XVI to death.On January 21,1793, the king was beheaded on the guillotine. -
Reign of Terror ends
The Committee acterd to defend France from foreign and domestic threats. The National Convention and the Committee of Public Safety began the Reign of Terror. Close to 40,000 were killed during this period, 16,000 died under the blade of the guillotine. -
New constitutuion is created
The new constitution of 1795 established a national legislative assembly consisting of two chambers which were the Council of 500 which initiated legislation and the Council of Elders which accepted or declined proposed laws. -
Napolean takes part in coup d'etat
Napolean took part in the coup d'etat that overthrew the government of the Directory. Napolean had a lot of power on his side. Napolean controlled the government at one point in time. -
Napolean is crowned emperor
After ruling government, Napolean crowned himself the emperor. He had domestic policies that were to be followed. -
