    On 14th July 1789, the people of Paris attacked the Bastille and had become a prison and a symbol of absolutism. Later the National Constituent Assambly introduced. Then it publish the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

    France is written constitution ended royal absolutism, stablishing a constitution monarchy. Under the separation of powers, legislative power was held by the Assambly, executive power by the king and judicil power by independent court.

    Opposition to the constitutional monarchy

    A Legislative Assembly was formed in October 1791, and France not had a contitutional monarchy. The clergy and nobility who did not want to give up their priviledges. The other groups belived that the reforms did not go far enough. These radical revolutionaries were the `sans culottes´

    Other European monarchs felt threatened by the ideas os the French Revolution. In 1792, Austria and prussia declared war on France. In August 1792 there was an insurrection: the Tuileries Palace was attacked and the Royal Family was tajen prisoner.

    Girondins Convention
    Luis XVI dead in 23/01/1793 and was created two radicals groups: Jacobins used support fom the sans culottes and the Girondins, or moderate republicans, controlled the assambly.

    The Reing of Terror

    The radical revolutionaries used support from the sans culottes to seize power from the Girondins in June 1793. The Jacobins leader Maximilien Robespierre assumed all powers, and established a dictatorship. More than 50.000 people were executed on the guillotine. Robespierre tried to ease the economic crisis by establishing maximum prices for basic items. In 1794, moderate revolutionaries arrest a Robespierre and his followed , who were then executed by guillotine.

    The Directory

    A new Constitution established limited suffrage based on property ownership. A moderate goverment was led by a five-members Directory. Radicals conspired against the goverment. The royalist also led revolts and counter-revolutionary activities with the aim of restorning the Bourbon dynasty.
