    France was in heavy debt, so as to solve this Louis XVI established the Estates-General which put citizens in three levels of society. First Estate: Clergy 5% Second Estate: Nobles 1.5% Third Estate: Bourgeoisie 98%

    Louis XVI caused France to have a huge debt with the wars, so he attempted to raise taxes to the 3rd estate. They were unhappy with this and were tired of always being outvoted. They were locked out of their usual meeting spot so they met on a tennis court and declared themselves The National Assembly. They all took an oath that they would meet regularly no matter what until France had a real constitution.

    Parisians stormed the Bastille, a prison for political prisoners. They did this to collect gun powder and weapons to protect the National Assembly. There were no political prisoners in there, only 7 inmates which they freed. This is a pivotal event in the French Revolution which celebrated the establishment of a constitutional monarchy.

    The National Assembly sets forth the Declaration of the Rights of Man. This abolished fuedalism, and cited natural rights and demanded an end to estate discrimination.

    October Days (Women's March)
    Thousands of women left Paris and marched to Louis XVI's palace in Versailles. They were angered by the bread shortages and made their way to their king for a confrontation.The women demanded lower bread prices and Louis VXI promised more bread. A guard tried to free Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette but several women broke in and they were determined to murder Marie. They ended up killing the guards and carrying their heads on pitchforks. Louis XVI and Marie had no choice but to return to Paris.

    The Royal Family Attempts to Flee
    Louis XVI and Marie Antionette feared for their lives and decided to try and escape from their palace in Paris. They were told ways that they could flee to avoid suspicion but Marie did not obey to it and ordered a huge coach that was flashy and very slow. They ended up being recognized, got caught, and were taken back to Paris. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were then seen as traitors.

    The Legislative Assembly surrendered to the force of the new revolutionists. the Insurrectionary Commune, and voted to end the monarchy and depose Louis XVI.

    The September Massacre consisted of several attacks on the prisons in Paris. Approximately 1200 prisoners were killed from angry citizens of Paris.

    Reign of Terror

    A 10-month period in which suspected enemies of the revolution were guillotined. Tens of thousands of people were killed and many of the killings were carried out under orders from Robespierre who was leader of the Committee of Public Safety. Its purpose was to purge France of enemies of the Revolution and protect the country from foreign invaders.
