Fall of Bastille
Parisians attacked the bastille. 1000 attacked and overwhelmed 100 royal soldiers and Bastille falls to citizens. this event becomes the symbol of the beginning of the Revolution. -
The Great Fear
Rumors that nobles hired outlaws for security terrorized peasants spread. No outlaws were hired, but panic spread. Peasants began to attack nobles , and burned documents and houses. -
Declaration of the Rights of Man
-stated "men are born and remain free and equal in rights."

Women march on Versailles
The price of bread rose dramatically. 6000 Parisians women marched to Versailles and demanded bread. When none came, the broke into the palace and killed two guards. -
Civil Constitution of Clergy
National Assembly takes over Church lands. Catholic Church loses land and political independence. National Assembly sells church lands to pay off France's debts. Peasents oppose change. -
Constitution of 1791
this declared France to be a constitutional monarchy. -

Louis XVI and his family try to escape diguised as peasents, but are recognized near the border and sent back to Paris. -

Members of the National Convention became afraid of Robespierre and in order to protect themselves they turned on him. He was arrested and guillotined the next day -
Creation of Directory
Moderates regained control mover the National Convention and drafted another constitution creating bicameral legislature and a 5 person executive. They helped control economic inflation and placed Napolean at the head of the French Army. -
Napoleon becomes Consulate
The directory was replaced with Napoleon as a first consulate, who commanded the French army. -
Constitution of 1795

Creation of National Convention
they provided a new constitution for the country after the monarchy was over thrown. -

Took place at Cape Trafalgar. It was a fight between Spain and France, and the Royal Navy. It was the last sea fight of the period. The Royal Navy won. -

Invasion of Spain
The war began when French and Spanish armies invaded Portugal. France turned on Spain. Napoleon was defeated. -
Invasion of Russia
Turning point in the Napoleonic wars. The russians retreated and destroyed anything that could be put to use by the French. They were left with no food and little supplies so many soldiers died. -
Exile to Elba
Napoleon abdicates the throne and is banished to the Mediterranean island of Elba. -
Congress of Vienna
a conference that was called to help remake Europe after the fall of Napoleon. The main goal was to create a balance of power. -
A Hundred Days
Started when Napoleon arrived in Paris after Exile on Elba and ended when Louis XVIII returned to Paris. -

The French were defeated by a combination of armies. The defeat at Waterloo put an end to Napoleon's rule.
