Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy sign an alliance saying that they will support each other if attacked by France or Russia. -
Trple Entente Formed
Britain, France and Russia form an alliance to protect each other from any attacks. -
Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, was assassinated at Sarajevo. He was killed by a member of a group called Young Bosnia. His assassination set off a chain of events that lead to World War 1. -
Serbian Ultimatum
Austria-Hungary sends Serbia an Ultimatum including very many harsh terms and demand a reply in 48 hours. The Serbs accept all the points accept one but that isn't good enough for Austria and they decline the offer. -
Austria declares war on Serbia
Because of Austira declaring war on Serbia, Russia begins to also prepare for war. They do this because they have always been a protector of Serbia. -
Germany Declares war on Russia
Because of Germany and Austria-Hungary's alliance Germany is required to back Austria. They follow through and declare war on Russia. This begins a chain reaction of countries declaring war on eachother and eventually all of Europe's most powerful countries are involved in this war, World War 1. -
US ship Lusitania sunk by German U-boats
This US ship full of citizens was sunk off the coast of Ireland. This infuriated the US and its people but we were still not ready to go to war. -
Zimmerman Telegram
Zimmerman TelegraphThis German telegram to Mexico was intercepted and decoded. When the US people found out about this they were about ready for war. -
US declares war on Germany
We had enough of Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare and decided it was the right time to join the war. -
Russia backs out
Russia signs a peace treaty with the Central Powers, ending their involvement in the war. -
Fighting Ends
Germany signs an armistice and fighting ends on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles is signed and the war is officailly over. This war was supposed to be the war to end all wars but we know that wasn't correct. Germany was handed harsh punishments and the European ecomony would take a while to get back to where it was pre-war.
