  • Chapter 1

    Chapter 1
    Hazel, a girl with stage four cancer, reluctantly goes to a cancer support group. There she meets a boy named August us or Gus for short. Hazel immediately starts to like Gus because he is very charismatic. Gus then invites her to his house to watch a movie.
  • Chapter 2

    Chapter 2
    Hazel goes over to Gus's house to watch V for Vendetta. There she meets his family and learns more about his cancer story. Even though Hazel did not like the movie, she enjoyed spending time with Gus.
  • Chapter 3

    Chapter 3
    Hazel spends that night reading a book that Gus recommended for her. The next day is her half birthday, so she eat her 33rd half birthday cake and goes to the mall to meet her good friend, Caitlyn.
  • Chapter 4

    Chapter 4
    Hazel ended her 33rd half birthday by reading her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. She is obsessed with this book and dreams of one day of meeting the author. Later that day she meets a boy named Isaac at cancer support group who has severe cancer in his eyes.
  • Chapter 5

    Christmas passes and Hazel remains in constant contact with Gus. Gus sends Hazel an important text when he finds the assistant to the author of An Imperial Affliction. Gus starts to talk to the author and to the assistent.
  • Chapter 6

    Chapter 6
    Isaac has surgery to remove his cancer. The surgery is successful, but he becomes completely blind. Hazel and Gus end up going to see Isaac in the hospital to support him.
  • Chapter 7

    Hazel wakes up in the middle of the night to a sharp pain in her chest. Her parents immediately drove her over to the hospital fearing the worst. Hazel woke up a day later in the ICU to find out that her lungs had filled up with fluid. She is alright but has to stay in the hospital for a few more day just in case.
  • Chapter 8

    Gus sends Hazel a text asking if she wants to meet the author of An Imperial Affliction in Amsterdam. He can do this because he still has his wish from a non profit organization that grants wishes to kids with cancer. Even though Hazel was not in great health, her doctors let her go because of they thought she needed a win.
  • Chapter 9

    The day before Gus and Hazel leave for Amsterdam go to see Isaac who is now out of the Hospital. They end up talking about what the future hold and play videos games that were made for blind people.
  • Chapter 10

    Chapter 10
    Hazel, Gus, and Hazel's mom pack and head to the airport to Amsterdam. It is the first time any of them have been on an airplane since Hazel and Gus were diagnosed with cancer. The group makes it through customs with minimal issues.
  • Chapter 11

    Chapter 11
    The group finally arrives in Amsterdam after a very long flight. They are all very excited to see the scenery and the different cultures. Hazel and Gus go on a fancy dinner date that the author of An Imperial Affliction Paid for.
  • Chapter 12

    Chapter 12
    Hazel and Gus are finally able to meet the author of An Imperial Affliction. However, he was not a very nice person and just drank Alcohol in front of them. His assistant decides to quit on the spot and help out Gus and Hazel.
  • Chapter 13

    Chapter 13
    Gus and Hazel end up going sightseeing to Anne Frank's House. Afterwards, Gus ends up telling Hazel that his cancer has returned and that it would not be long before he would die. The group ended their trip to Amsterdam and started to head home to the States.
  • Chapter 14

    Chapter 14
    The group returns to the United States and they get picked up at the airport by Hazel's Dad. Hazel, Gus, and Isaac end up getting together the next day so that they could catch up and play video games.
  • Chapter 15-16

    Gus ends up going to the Hospital in order to get treatment for his cancer. Hazel spends most of her time with him so that he does not feel alone.
  • Chapter 17-18

    After a month of being home from the hospital, Gus is able to spend the rest of his day at his home. Hazel constantly visits him. Gus ended up stealing his mom's car so he could go for a drive. He ended up collapsing and Hazel had to go rescue him.
  • Chapters 19-20

    Gus ends back in the hospital after he stole his mom's car. Hazel is not so scared of losing Gus that it starts to put a strain on her relationship with her parents. Gus asked Hazel if she would speak at his funeral. That was their last conversation together.
  • Chapter 21

    Gus died eight days later in the ICU. He died early in the morning and he left peacefully in his sleep. Hazel had to start writing her eulogy for Gus.
  • Chapter 22

    Chapter 22
    Gus' funeral comes around a week after his death. His parents, his step sister, an old friend he played basketball with, and Hazel spoke. She talked about all the things he did for her.
  • Chapter 23-24

    Time passes after Gus' funeral and Hazel wants to go talk to Isaac. On the way there she runs into the author of An Imperial Affliction. He apologizes about being a jerk and says that Gus was one of the few good people on Earth. The author tells Hazel that Gus wrote something just for her in his final day.
  • Chapter 25

    Chapter 25
    Hazel finds that the final thing Gus wrote for her was an eulogy for her funeral. He was sad that he could never say his goodbyes to her. Gus wrote about what Hazel did for him over his final months. That is the end of the book.
