In December 1922, it joined with Ukraine, Belorussia and the Transcaucasus Federation and that union became the Soviet Union. -

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill described this territory as being behind an Iron Curtain. The division provided the framework for the Cold War which ran from roughly 1947-1991. -

Gorbachev introduced two new Russian words: "perestroika" meaning restructuring and "glasnost" meaning openness. Gorbachev allowed people to stir their own nations ("perestroika") and also allowed them freedom of speech/expression ("glasnost").
Gorbachev wanted to sign a treaty that allowed each of the 15 republics independence. This is because all the republics demanded independence. -

The Soviet people agreed with his ideas at first, but then soon the Soviet people began to gain too much power. -

In 1989 the first free labor union was founded in the communist Poland. The communist governments in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Romania fell in December of 1989. Soviet Union passes a law allowing republics to break away
falloftheUSSRIn June of 1990, the Russian president Boris Yeltsin declared that he wanted to remove Russia from the USSR and become independent. Military leaders came to Moscow to try and stop the falling of the USSR. Unfortunately it did not work too well. Gorbachev was slowly moving to the bottom and Yeltsin was quickly rising to the top. Soviet people began to enjoy political and economical freedom so much that each republic started to elect a representative. -

Mikhail Gorbachev had come into power in 1985 which had changed the communist Soviet Union forever. He had given each republic independence. The economic and political views of the Soviet people had changed forever. After the Soviet Union fell apart, the region divided into 15 different independent republics. Each new republic set up their own government and elected their own leader.
