    Diocletian split the Roman Empire into two pieces, and added junior emperors, making a total of four Caesar's.When Diocletian and Maximian abdictated their co-rulers, civil war broke out.

    The Acceptance of Christianity

    In 312, the emperor Constantine defeated his co-emperor Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge and became sole ruler. Later Constantine defeated the Eastern Ruler and then became sole ruler for the whole Roman Empire

    Fall of Official Paganism

    The Roman Emperor Julian also known as Julian the Apostate attempted to reverse the religious trend to Christianity. He failed and died in the East fighting the Parthians.

    Battle of Adrianople

    Eastern Roman Empire Flavius Julius Valens Augustus fought and was defeated and killed by the Visigoths at the Battle of Adrianople.
  • Period: 379 to 395

    East-West Split

    After Valen's death Thedosius briefly reunited the Empire but it didn't last beyond his reign. At his death the Empire was divided by his sons Arcadius in the East and Honorius in the West.

    Sack of Rome

    Visigoths made several successful incursions into Italy beginning in 401 C.E. This is often given as the official date of The Fall of Rome.

    Huns Attack

    The central Asians Huns led by their king Attila threatend Rome, were paid off, then attacked agin.

    Vandals Sack Rome

    Vandals plunder Rome amounting to the fourth sack of the city but by an agreement with Pope Leo the first that they injure few people or buildings.

    Fall of the Emperor of Rome

    The last western emperor Romulus Augustulus is deposed by the barbarian general Odoacer who then rules Italy.
