    : On January 18th Thomas Jefferson seeks authorization for the exploration of the Louisana Territory he had just bought from fFance. News of the Louisana Purchase was announced on July 4th that year, and by May 14th they begin the expedition. On May 14th, Clark and a team leaves from Camp Dubois, and Lewis catches up a few days later.

    A good experience with weather.
    At the beginning of the expedition, the weather was excellent. This did, have a big affect on the journey! They got a good start on the journey of a lifetime.
  • The Death of Sergeant Floyd.

    The Death of Sergeant Floyd.
    THREE TO FIVE SENTENCE DESCRIPTION: Sergeant Charles Floyd was one of the men that accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition. On the 20th of August, he died from what was probably a burst appendix and was buried on a hill now named Floyd’s Bluff. He was the first person to die west of the Mississippi River.

    Experience with the Sioux.
    The expedition did what they always did when meetings natives. This composed of parading in full-uniform and demonstrating a gun. However, the Sioux were not impressed, and saw them as a threat to trade. The two sides almost escalated into a fight! Luckily, chief Black Buffalo brought things back to a diplomatic level.

    Experience with Fort Mandan.

    Fort Mandan is the fort that the expedition built to spend the winter in. It was located along the Missouri River. From the journal’s recounts, it was a great stay, the natives were friendly, and everybody was in high spirits.
  • Sacajawea gives birth.

    Sacajawea gives birth.
    : For the beginning of the trip, the native woman Sacagawea was pregnant. On Feburary 11th, she gave birth to a baby boy, Jean Baptiste. Louis actually helped speed up the birth by giving her a drink made from the rings of a rattlesnake’s tail.

    Lewis is ill, and a plant influences the mission.
    Lewis fell very ill on June 11th, 1805. They had found a new plant of which they named the common chokecherry. When Lewis was ill, they boiled these until they produced a thick black liquid. Lewis drank this, and within a few hours, he felt all better.

    Experience with the Shoshone.
    : On August 13th, a couple of Shoshone women saw strangers while they were doing errands. It was Lewis and his men. It was the first time Shoshone has seen white men. They showed they were friendly by painting their faces. They sold them horses when they realized Sacajawea was their chief's sister.

    Shoshone aid the Expedition.
    : The expedition discovered a group of Shoshone. Their goal was to negotiate with them for horses, so they brought in Sacagawea to translate for them. As they spoke, they discovered that the chief was Sacagawea’s brother! The Shoshone gave them 29 horses and a mule, gladly. The horses greatly benefitted them… they couldn’t of made it through the mountainous terrain without them
  • Idaho, and a new tribe.

    Idaho, and a new tribe.
    : As the crew exited the Bitterroot Mountains, they were dying from starvatlon. They had entered the territory of the Nez Percce. Luckily, the tribe decided to befriend them. They fed them, and many of the men got sick from eating so much. This territory is now Idaho.

    The expedition cheers at a cow.
    : This was one of the stranger occurrences. On September 20th, the men saw a cow and cheered at it. It was a sign that they were close to the settlement.
  • A Fort Clatsop Christmas.

    A Fort Clatsop Christmas.
    : By December 25th, the expedition had settled in Fort Clatsop. They made their decision to build it by voting, which included the slave and Sacagawea. This was important because women didn’t gain the right to vote for another century. On Christmas, they gave eachother presents of tobacco and handkerchiefs.
  • Two Blackfoot natives are shot.

    Two Blackfoot natives are shot.
    This was the only case of natives killed by the expedition. Two Blackfeet were shot and killed. A group of Blackfoot came to the expedition’s camp and tried to take their guns, because the thought the new Americans were a threat. They were right, but unfortunately, the members fought back, and the surviving Blackfeet fled.
  • The expedition is finally home.

    After the journey of a lifetime, Lewis, Clark, and company return to their families and homes.
