Prehistoric Weightlifting - Rocks

Weightlifting was first a test of manliness between men. Tribes would lift a 'special' rock to see who was the strongest, and often the one who could lift the rock a larger amount of times in a given amount of time was the winner. -
Weightlifting Introduced to the Olympic Games
Weightlifting was first introduced to the Olympic Games. It was included in (1896), 1900 and 1904. These games had one hand lifts* and two hand lifts. -
Fédération Haltérophile Internationale; FHI Introduced
After the 1904 Olympic Games, Weightlifting was removed until 1920 when the International Olympic Committee suggested the Fédération Haltérophile Internationale [FHI] (or the International Weightlifting Federation) was created to regularize and supervise events. -
One and Two Hand Lifts
By 1928, weightlifting events no longer had one hand weightlifting - only two hand weightlifting events were practised. These events were the 'clean and jerk*' the 'snatch' and the 'clean and press' -
The 'Clean and Press' Event is Removed
The clean and press lift is abandoned. -
Womens Weighlifting Event Added to the Olympics
In 2000, a women's weightlifting event was added to the Olympics, meaning that women had a fair opportunity to participate.
