The Evolution of Video Game's Graphics

  • The first ever video game "graphics".

The first ever video game "graphics".
The first ever computer to support a video game was the "Nimrod" computer. The Nimrod computer was built in the UK by Ferranti in 1951 to exclusively play video games. And of course it's going to be 2D. https://www.wired.com/2010/06/replay/
  • The graphic's upgrade.

    The graphic's upgrade.
The next upgrade in video games graphics was now black and white and more "detailed", if you can call it that. Pong is just a simple game with a 2 rectangles bouncing the ball back and forth. You could say it was a very simple, animated version of tennis. It's also in 2D. https://www.wired.com/2010/06/replay/
  • Text based adventure.

    Text based adventure.
In 1968, there was a new graphics design. Well, it wasn't technically new, because it's in a form of texts. Text-based adventures are games where you put in an input into the provided space like "Go east" or "jump off bridge" and the game will respond if you input correctly. For example the game "Hamurabi" was one of the first text based adventure games. http://teachinghistory.org/history-content/ask-a-historian/25764
  • A more visual format.

    A more visual format.
In 1980, Atari release a game called "Adventure". This time it was like Pong's graphics but you could move your character around freely. There wasn't any free camera movement and it was locked in one place and a top down view. The camera angle would change any time the player goes into a new location. Did I also mention that it was 2D? http://teachinghistory.org/history-content/ask-a-historian/25764
  • Three-Dimensional fun.

    Three-Dimensional fun.
It wasn't until 1981, about a year later of Atari's "Adventure", when we had the first game with a slight 3D graphics. That game was called "3D Monster Maze" by Malcom Evans. When I say slight I mean slight because it uses the one point perspective sketch to make it look like it's 3D. Also it's in the name. listverse.com/2010/05/11/15-firsts-in-video-game-history/
  • First person time.

    First person time.
First person games are mainly composed of actions and shooters. The first one to ever land on Earth was "Wolfenstein 3D". "Wolfenstein 3D" was created by id Software and it became a phenomenal hit. Later id Software would create the game "Doom" in 1993, another first person game hit. uk-microsites.ign.com/history-of-first-person-shooters/

    First Third Person PoV game.
From what I can dig up without the internet blocking my access, the first 3rd person game is "Tomb Raider" made in 1996. Third person games are from the back, showing the entire character moving around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKVS_81Op5A
