The Evolution of the Technology we Listen to Music on

  • Phonograph

    The phonograph was the first machine that could be used to record and play back music, letting people listen to their favorite music at any time they would have liked to. There was a wooden cylinder covered in wax that the sound recorded onto with a stylus.
  • Record Player

    After the cylinders were reinvented multiple times until they were the shape of a vinyl record and the phonograph had been reinvented enough times to where they got the style of the record player.
  • Radio

    After the war, in Massachusetts, a radio station started playing music; and some time after, multiple other radio stations started broadcasting music daily. Some radio stations were even shut down because a federal worker in New York said, “there is no place on the ether for entertainment.” The radio's big boom was between the 20's to the 50's. The first "top 40's" station was played in the 50's; before the "top 40's" station, the stations were broadcasted live for better quality.

    Magnetic tape rolled up and put in a plastic cartridge was a new way to listen to music in the late 50's.By the early 60's, tapes were off the shelves of stores. They were moved off the shelves because they had proved to be too complicated compared to the records and record players which people were using before to be listening to music.

    The new way to listen to music had become better than they had been when they had sold tapes before. In the late 60's, all Ford cars were sold with a 8 Track Player to put them in and listen to music with. Even people who were in Vietnam liked the small tapes that they could carry around with ease.

    There was a tiny tape player you could carry around that was let out in the late 70's This was also popular with the fighters in Vietnam.
  • CD's (Compact Disk)

    CD's were made for an easier way to be able to press play and listen to the song that you wanted to listen to; and it was easier because you didn't have to move the needle to a different indention on the record.
  • MP3 Players

    MP3 Players
    It is a digital way to listen to music, making everything easier to carry around and listen to when you wanted to. Also, you didn't have to buy the songs you didn't want to buy if you bought an mp3 player.
