The first paint was made from a substances called ochre, hematite, manganese oxide, and charcoal. -
618 BCE
Egypt
In Ancient Egypt people started making paints out of ground glass or semiprecious stones, lead, earth, or animal blood with oil or fat. They made the color harden by adding egg yolk and other gummy substances. -
"The Cookbook"
In 1630 paint became illegal because a preacher in the Charleston colony painted his house and he was accused of sacrilege. so people made a "Cookbook" showing how to make paint using lime and ground oyster shells to make white wash, and then adding iron oxide for red or copper oxide for green. Also milk, egg whites, coffee, and rice were used. -
Paint Grinding and Oils
in 1718 Marshall Smith invented a machine that would grind up paint pigments for people. At this time paints were mainly made out of oils or had a water or oil base. -
Ready to go Paint
In 1866 Sherwin-Williams invented the first premade paint in stores. It was sold in a tin can as raw umber oil paint. -
World War II
During WWII paints became scares. Chemist had to start mixing alcohol and acids together to make new paints that were more water based. This made all oil based paints quickly go out of style and made way for house paints. -
Aerosol Paint
Aerosol Paint, a.k.a spray paint was invented in 1949 by Ed Seymour. He was in search of an easy way to demonstrate his aluminum coating for painting radiators. His wife suggested a makeshift spray gun. Then he mixed paint and aerosol in a can with a spray head and invented Spray Paint. -
Modern Day Paint
IN 1984 a app on the mac pad came out allowing people to paint digitally. And now-a-days people prefer digital paints over actual paint.
