The First Helmet
This helmet dates back hundreds of years ago. Helmets were used in the Army/Navy game where Admiral Joseph Mason Reeves had the first hemet made for him. -
The ZH Helmet
A leather helmet that had unique suspension, ventalation, and communication ideas. -
The 1920s
The soft leather style like the ZH helmet was used. Pictured left Earl Lambeau wearing the helmet while playing for the Green Bay Packers - More padding was used in these helmets. -
The 1930s Helmets
It wasn't until the 1930s that the hard leather style of helmets was introduced into the football world. -
The 1940s Helmets
IN 1940 the invention of the first chin strap was added to the helmets
in 1943 the nation football league passed a requirement that all players wear helmets during games

The 1950s
Platic helmets and Internal Padding was introduced - the single faced bar was added to the plastic helmets in 1955 In the year 1956 the first apperance of the Radio helmet was introduced. -
The 1960s
The double bar mask and plastic helmets were used during this time. -
The 1980s
The molded polycarbonate shells appeared In 1984 the first apperance of protectice visors were introduced and in 1986 the first polycarbonate helmets were used. -
The 90s
NFL requires face masks to be transparent -
The 00s
In 2004 the single bar helmets were banned from the NFL never to be seen again in football. -
The 1970s
Energry absorbing helmets were added to the game. In 1971 Riddell adds air bladders inside helmets to soften impact and in 1975 the full face mask appears on helmets. -
