- Reverend Samuel Read Hull created the first private normal school in Vermont
- Shortly after in 1839 the first public normal school was created.

Department of Education
- Department of Education was created by Andrew Johnson.
- It was updated to the office of education in 1868 because it was thought it would have too much control over local schools.

GI Bill of Rights
- Signed into law by Franklin D. Roosevelt
- Provided troops with funds for college education, unemployment, and housing
- Used to reduce post war depression, and gave 15 million US citizens access to education.

- Was actually five different court cases
- Removed segregation from schools

A Nation at Risk
- A report requested by President Ronald Reagan
- It supposedly brought to light the areas in witch the United States was lacking when compared to the rest of the world.
- Even today there is a debate over this topic

Americans with Disabilities Act
- Prohibited the discrimination of others based off of disabilities in all areas of public life e.g. school, work, transportation, etc.
- The law gave the same opportunities to those with disabilities as everyone else
- In 2008 there was an amendment to the act making terms more useful today

Columbine School Shooting
- This was one of the most influential school shootings in the nation, it set the boundaries for what should be done during a school shooting
- It also created the standard practice of lockdown drills in schools

- Was passed by President Bush
- Wanted to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantaged

Common Core Initiative
- Definition: description of skills each student should have at each grade level
- The drive for common learning in english/language arts and mathematics
- There was a big push at a Chicago summit in 2009 wherein the National Governors Association, and the Council of Chief State School Officers met to discuss what should be done
