Lemon juice either consumed or applied as a face tonic was a popular method of achieving the light complection. To have a tan, was to suggest that a lady was of a lower class, who worked the land. Cosmetic innovations of the 1920s of lipstick, eye-shadows, and mascara from brands like Maybelline and Max Factor were now to be seen on dressing tables and handbags across America and Europe. As most lipsticks were matte, Vaseline was used to add a little luster and gloss. Powder Compacts had replaced the messy loose powders of the 1920s and 1930s for women on-the-go so that they could powder their face throughout the work day.

In 1950 Hazel Bishop unveiled to much excitement the first non smear lipstick. The ruling shades were pastels and pink lipstick which replaced the reds for a time as the lip color of choice especially amongst younger women.

White eye liner was invented and used to draw down over the upper lid to the inner corner of the eye, which gave the effect of a bigger and more defined eye shape. In contrast with paler eye-shadows, foundations and rouges all emphasis went on eyeliners and lashes. For a time, bright lips took second to bold eyes.
