This is where the first major battle of the Civil War took place, where Confederate General Stonewall Jackson got his nickname for his defensive line firing from a stone wall holding 34,000 troops back. The confederates ultimately won, and inflicted heavy causalities on the Union.

Battle of Antietam September 17, 1862
The bloodiest day in American military history was fought between the Confederate forces and Union forces. They each attacked multiple times, and right before the confederates collapsed, A.P Hill's troops provided back up and made the Army of the Potomac retreat, ending it in a draw. First Battle of Kinston
On December 14, 1862, Union forces under the command of Gen. John G. Foster launched their second attack on Confederate Gen. Nathan G. “Shanks” Evans at the First Battle of Kinston. Foster broke through the left flank and sent Evans retreating.

Battle of Nashville
Union Forces blasted the Confederates out of their trenches around Nashville, and almost wiping them out completely. The confederates tried to hold their trenches around Nashville, but the pressure was too strong, so they were forced to retreat all the way past Nashville.
